A well-known Milwaukee church choir performed with Brian Kelley during day 3 of the RNC

Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ performed with country singer Brian Kelley at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night.

The performance of "American Spirit" was framed around a convention celebration of fraternity members from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, who drew national attention in May when they protected the American flag after it was torn down during a pro-Palestinian protest on campus. Upon seeing a Palestinian flag in its place, held the American flag up so that it wouldn't touch the ground.

Florida-born Brian Kelley is a country singer with strong Christian roots. Formerly part of Florida Georgia Line, Kelley performed at Summerfest on the Fourth of July.

Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ is at 3500 W. Mother Daniels Way. The church has been central to Milwaukee's Black community for years.

Who founded Holy Redeemer?

Pastor Sedgwick Daniels founded the church in 1986. Born in 1959 in Milwaukee, Daniels received multiple doctorates in divinity before opening his church. His dedication and expertise helped the congregation blossom over the years from 40 members to several thousand. He died in 2023 at the age of 64.

Who leads Holy Redeemer today?

Since the passing of her brother, Dr. Valerie Daniels-Carter has taken over the leadership of the church. In addition to being pastor, Daniels-Carter has also served as minister of music at the church for 37 years.

A highly educated and accomplished businesswoman, she is the president and CEO of V&J Holding Companies. Her company holds control over many well-known brands such as Auntie Anne's Soft Pretzels, Burger King, and Pizza Hut.

What other services does Holy Redeemer provide for the community?

The church created the Christian Academy for children to learn through their faith. In addition, it developed the Kathryn T. Daniels Preparatory Academy, a charter school for grades K-8.

In 2000, the Mother Kathryn Daniels Conference Center was created as a space to host different social and community activities. The Institute for the Preservation of African American Music and Arts was also established in 2018.

This deep appreciation for the arts even led to the creation of a theatre in the church, where workshops and performances are held to foster artistic expression.
