Police shot and injured a 22-year-old Milwaukee man late Wednesday night after he exchanged fire with officers about four miles northwest of downtown.

The man was arrested and transported to a local hospital to treat non-fatal injuries, Milwaukee police said in a Thursday morning news release.

According to the release, officers were called to an apparent shooting on the 4300 block of Capitol Drive and found a person inside a gas station who was wanted in connection with a double shooting that occurred Tuesday on the 3900 block of North 24th Street.

The man disregarded commands to show his hands and instead fired a gun at officers and others inside the store, police said. He ran out of the store and "fired numerous shots" at officers, who returned fire and struck the man.

There were no other reported injuries from the gunfire, police said, and no shooting victims were located.

Three officers were involved in the incident and will be placed on administrative duty per department policy on officer-involved shootings.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson said early Thursday morning the exchange of gunfire was “completely unrelated" to the Republican National Convention, which is being held downtown.

"This is not a common occurrence in Milwaukee," Johnson said.

In an apartment building behind the gas station, Diarre Tolliver, 49, said he was in bed when he heard gunfire. Initially, he thought it might be fireworks going off, but soon saw police "everywhere" when he looked out his window.

He's lived in the building for a year and said he hadn't experienced anything like it. Police had the area closed for much of the night, he said, and when he looked in the morning the scene had been cleared.

"It was like Trump was around or something," he said. "It happened so fast, I heard the gunshots and then all I know, I was surrounded by police all over. They had everything taped off,"
