MILWAUKEE (NEXSTAR) – The Republican National Convention wraps up in Milwaukee with former president Donald Trump officially becoming his party’s presidential nominee for the third time.

It’s expected the former president will call for unity shifting to a different tone of speech after last weekend’s assassination attempt.

“I think you’re going to hear him talk about what happened on Saturday. I think you’re going to hear him talk about his successes that he had in his first four years in office,” said Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas.).

Elected Republicans for the RNC say they hope the former president calls on all Americans to look beyond the differences of red and blue.

“This is a great opportunity for our president, our presidential nominee, and the Republican Party to be the one saying, let’s focus on the issues, let’s lower the temperature” said Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.).

Wednesday night, Mr. Trump’s running mate, Senator J.D. Vance, laid out his vision for the next four years.

“Together, we will put the citizens of America first, whatever the color of their skin. We will, in short, make America great again,” said Vance.

Allies of the former president, a leader never known to pull punches, are optimistic he’ll rise to the moment Thursday night.

“I think this speech is going to move the hearts and minds of the American people,” Rep. Rick Allen (R-Ga.).

Mr. Trump is expected to be the final speaker of the night, afterwards he’ll be joined on stage by his running mate and their families.
