Milwaukee location of Hamburger Mary's to temporarily close as it looks for new space

Drag fans and burger buffs will have one less spot in Milwaukee for Sunday brunches, weekly bingo games and dinner with a show ... at least temporarily.

Hamburger Mary’s, the popular drag depot and burger bar at 730 S. Fifth St., has announced it will be moving from its current Walker’s Point location and will temporarily close as it searches for a new space.

The Hamburger Mary’s property includes the adjacent building at 734 S. Fifth St., formerly Hunty’s Social Club & Mary’s Arcade Bar, which had been for sale for over a year.

“After months on the market, a buyer emerged who already had great ties to the Walker's Point community,” Hamburger Mary’s said in a statement. “He offered to purchase not only the buildings that made up the bar side, but also the main restaurant building that houses Hamburger Mary’s.”

After much thought, Hamburger Mary's co-owners and twin brothers Ashley and Brandon Wright said it was an offer they couldn’t refuse.

A deed recorded by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue on July 17 listed the buyer as G5 and Associates LLC. The sale was listed at $1,717,000.

“This is bittersweet,” Brandon Wright said in the statement. “While we are sad to announce that Hamburger Mary’s will be closing, we are excited for the possibilities that a new location can offer. And we’re looking forward to seeing what’s in store for this space in Walker’s Point.”

Hamburger Mary’s last day of service before sashaying away to a new location will be July 28. Reservations are open for all events until the closure, and can be made online at hamburgermarys.com/mke.

“This is not the first time we’ve moved locations,” co-owner Ashley Wright said in the statement. “So we are pretty confident that we’ll find a great spot for Mary’s in Milwaukee. In fact, we’re hoping the third time’s the charm!”

In 2016, the drag bar and restaurant relocated from its former Bay View location at 2130 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., where it had operated since 2011. After the move, the original building was demolished to make way for the current Kinetik Apartment building.

Mary’s had a similar temporary closure before moving into its current space, formerly occupied by long-standing Mexican restaurant La Perla.

The Wright brothers said they are looking for a partner/investor to help run the new location. Interested parties can reach out at mke@hamburgermarys.com.
