Harris still planning Milwaukee campaign stop

(The Center Square) – Vice President Kamala Harris is set to campaign in Milwaukee on Tuesday, this time as a candidate for president.

Harris had this trip to Wisconsin planned long before President Joe Biden said Sunday that he is no longer running for re-election and endorsed his vice president.

Harris’ campaign has not officially said if Sunday’s announcement changes anything about Tuesday’s visit, but a campaign aide told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel there are no changes planned as of yet.

Harris has spent months campaigning for President Biden throughout Wisconsin, now she will campaign for herself.

Sunday saw some of Wisconsin’s top Democrats throw their support behind Harris in her bid for the presidency.

“I’m proud to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States,” U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin said in a statement, “I look forward to her candidacy as a new beginning for our party and our country and I am excited to work with her to lower costs for Wisconsin families, grow our Made in America economy, and restore our fundamental rights and freedoms.”

Several other state lawmakers, and even Wisconsin’s state superintendent also threw their support behind Harris.

“As an American, as a Wisconsinite, and as a Democrat, I look forward to supporting Vice President Kamala Harris in her campaign for President,” Sen. Mark Spreitzer, D-Beloit, said. “Kamala Harris has been a crucial part of every accomplishment of the Biden-Harris Administration, and her experience as an Attorney General, U.S. Senator, and Vice President means that she is ready to lead on day one. Vice President Harris will defeat [Former President] Donald Trump in November and finish the job the Biden-Harris Administration started.”

The latest Marquette Law School Poll gave President Biden a slight lead over former Trump. But several polls since then showed Trump with a growing lead.

Marquette pollsters did not ask about Harris in the most recent poll, but May’s Marquette poll showed that she is unpopular among Wisconsin voters.

The May poll gave Harris a 35% favorability rating, and an unfavorable rating of 59%. Pollsters say Harris is the least popular of the major candidates, 3 points less popular than Biden, and 7 points less popular than former Trump.
