Democratic presumptive nominee Kamala Harris laughed as the crowd at her first campaign rally in Milwaukee on Tuesday erupted into a chant of “lock him up” on mention of former President Donald Trump .

The chant, originally heard at Trump rallies during the 2016 presidential election and directed at then-Democratic rival nominee Hillary Clinton , was refashioned by Harris supporters against the former president, who faces indictments in multiple jurisdictions and was convicted on 34 counts at his New York “hush money” trial in June.

Harris told attendees: “I was elected attorney general of the state of California and I was a courtroom prosecutor before then. And in those roles I took on perpetrators of all kinds — predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain.”

“So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type,” she added.

The crowd of around 3,000 swing-state attendees at West Allis Central High School applauded as “lock him up” could be heard, causing Harris to pause and laugh.

The moment was captured by ABC News White House reporter Fritz Farrow :

The rally marked Harris’ unofficial elevation to the top of the Democratic ticket following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race and endorsement of her.

During her speech Harris also pledged to restore federal abortion rights and vowed to win the election on November 5, urging supporters to take action to make it happen.
