One dead after hit and run, Milwaukee police hit body, according to police

A 57-year-old woman is dead after a crash Saturday morning involving a Milwaukee police squad car.

"It’s been rough. It's really been rough," Fontain Blanton, a neighbor in the area, said. "Especially with this happening, I feel unsafe. It’s not safe for the kids."

The Milwaukee Police Department says two officers were responding to a hostage situation at around 2:30 a.m. when they struck a body in the road near N. 14th Street and W. North Avenue.

Police said they were able to determine that the individual, a 57-year-old, was first struck by an older black SUV in the same area.

First responders said the 57-year-old died on the scene. The Milwaukee Medical Examiner said the person was a woman.

"More so, it’s curiosity. How did you not see this lady?" Blanton asked.

Milwaukee Police said the two officers involved in the incident are a 38-year-old with over four years of service and a 25-year-old with over six years of service. They have both been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

According to data from Wisconsin Community Maps, eight other bikers or pedestrians have been hit by cars on the stretch of North Avenue from 9th Street to 19th Street in the past five years.

It's something Marshall Thompson, another neighbor, has seen firsthand.

"It really gets kind of rowdy over here. People are always speeding through intersections and causing accidents," Thompson explained.

Around the corner from the hit-and-run crash, there are speed bumps. But on the stretch of road where the woman was hit, there are no traffic calming measures.

"I think we could definitely use more speed bumps. Maybe even patrol guys," Blanton shared.

"It's just too close for me. This just happening makes me want to move even more," Blanton said.
