One person is dead after a hit-and-run crash Saturday evening, Milwaukee police say.
Police say the crash happened around 6:40 p.m. Saturday near 1st and Walker.
A vehicle was traveling eastbound on Walker St. at a high rate of speed when the vehicle struck a motorcycle that was traveling southbound on 1st St.
The occupants of the vehicle fled the scene on foot.
The 31-year-old motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Police say moments before the hit and run officers were flagged down near 3rd St. and West Virginia St. for an auto entry complaint where the officers observed the vehicle that would later strike the motorcycle. Officers then attempted to stop the vehicle in the same area. The driver in that vehicle fled and officers did not pursue them.
Milwaukee police continue to search for unknown suspects.
One neighbor, who lives near 1st and Walker, tells TMJ4 News that this crash is the latest example of reckless driving in that area.
"Actually, I had to call an ambulance on the day before Friday because I saw someone get hit on a motorcycle," said Zach Young, who witnessed the aftermath of the crash. "There's a lot of wrecks. There's a lot of people driving around dangerous."
Since the deadly motorcycle crash happened on the same weekend that thousands of motorcycle riders filled the streets of Milwaukee for the Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival, TMJ4's Ryan Jenkins asked riders for their message to other drivers on the road following this tragedy.
"We had a couple of incidents yesterday, going down to the lake," said Richard Smith, a Motorcyclist who was visiting the Harley-Davidson Museum on Sunday. "They're just not paying attention and with this many more bikes out there you have to pay that much more attention."
Now in the aftermath of the crash in Walker's Point, riders are asking other drivers to slow down and remember to give motorcycles space.
It's part of their plea for safer driving and awareness in a city famous for its motorcycles.
