Heat index to reach near 100 degrees in Milwaukee, Madison, southern Wisconsin

The heat index will reach close to 100 degrees Wednesday in Milwaukee, Madison and other parts of southern Wisconsin.

In Milwaukee and areas along the lakefront, the heat index — a combination of temperature and humidity; what the temperature feels like — will be around 93 to 94 degrees, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Cameron Miller.

However, in the Wisconsin River Valley area, and Lone Rock in particular, the heat index will be near 100 degrees.

"Your heat indices at least in Milwaukee are closer to 90, but the farther inland you go, you're starting to get into those 95, 96, 97, 98 heat indices," Miller said.

In Milwaukee, there may be a late breeze in the afternoon that would keep temperatures down, Miller said.

Temperatures should only stay this high Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, the heat indexes will be around 80 to 85 degrees, due to cloud coverage and possible storms and shower activity.

"Besides today, the rest of the week is very typical summertime weather," Miller said. "But for heat concerns, today's the main concern."
