(KOAM) - The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred at Markley Grove Park in Minneapolis, Kansas, today, Saturday, June 22.

According to the KBI, the manager of the Minneapolis Swimming Pool reported hearing three gunshots at approximately 8:20 a.m. Local law enforcement, including the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and Minneapolis Police Department, responded to the scene immediately to investigate the source of the gunfire.

As officers were conducting surveillance in the area, additional shots were fired.

The situation escalated when the alleged shooter, identified as 46-year-old Artemis Thor Peck of Minneapolis, came out from his residence. Peck reportedly discharged his firearm towards law enforcement officers and a surveillance drone.

In response to the threat, officers returned fire, striking Peck multiple times. Emergency medical services swiftly transported Peck to Salina Regional Health Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. He is expected to survive his injuries and will be transferred to a hospital in Wichita for further medical care.

The KBI was notified of the officer-involved shooting at approximately 9:55 a.m. and has since taken over the investigation.

The KBI indicated in the press release, their inquiry will be thorough and independent, focusing on determining the circumstances that led to the shooting. Once the investigation concludes, the findings will be presented to the Ottawa County Attorney for review.
