    Armstrong, Breck, Rebels, Pirates sends Nordic skiers to state

    Armstrong, Breck, and Cooper took part in the Section 6 meet for Nordic skiing on Feb. 5, while Champlin Park and Park Center took part in the Section 5 meet on Feb. 7.

    Armstrong

    The Armstrong Falcons finished fourth in the boys portion of the Section 6 meet, earning a team total of 362 points, just two behind third-place Orono/Delano.

    Boden Sundell and Anders Decker led the way for Armstrong, earning fifth and eighth place overall, respectively. Sundell earned an overall pursuit time of 24:40.4 and 76 points, which earned him a spot at the state tournament. Decker qualified for the state meet, completing a time of 25:13.0 for 73 points.

    Caidron Skerbitz and Joshua Sweeney earned a fifth-place finish in the Section 6 boys relay for Armstrong, earning a time of 13:36.9 and 147 points.

    The Armstrong girls team finished sixth with 330 points. Violet Suchy, Olivia Suchy, and Lilian Schulte were in 18th, 19th, and 20th, respectively, for the Falcons in the pursuit standings. Suchy, Armstrong’s top finisher, had a time of 34:46.3.

    Adelaide Senne and Naomi Dybvig finished sixth for Armstrong in the Section 6 girls relay, earning a time of 19:30.2 and 144 points.

    Breck

    The Breck boys Nordic team finished seventh at the Section 6 meet with a score of 192.

    Josh Frett was Breck’s top individual finisher, earning third place with an overall pursuit time of 24:26.3 and 78 points. Frett earned a spot at state.

    The Breck girls team finished fifth with a score of 335. The Mustangs’ top performer in the pursuit standings was Esme Gulbarnsen, who earned 10th and an individual place at state with a pursuit time of 31:33.3.

    Cooper

    Cooper boys Nordic skiing finished ninth in the Section 6 meet with a score of 81.

    Luke Skoglund and Robert Nichols competing for Cooper earned 40th and 41st place, respectively. Skoglund had a pursuit time of 41:51.5 and Nichols had a pursuit time of 43:32.4.

    The Cooper girls scored 121 points as they finished ninth in their section standings, also only competing in the pursuit portion of the contest.

    Cooper’s best finisher in the girls pursuit standings was Stella Fesenmaier, who earned 37th place with a pursuit time of 44:41.1.

    Champlin Park

    The Champlin Park boys finished third in the standings at the Section 5 meet, scoring 353 points to edge past Osseo by just one point. The boys were led in results by Sam Kyes, who finished 10th in the overall standings with a pursuit time of 32:23.5.

    The Rebels girls team finished in fifth at the section meet, scoring 341 points. The girls individual results were led by Abby Hibbs with a pursuit time of 34:26.0 to book an individual ticket to the state tournament.

    Park Center

    The Park Center/Totino-Grace boys team placed 11th at the Section 5 meet, earning 159 points. The co-op was led by Reid Binsfeld, who finished first overall with a pursuit time of 29:11.4 booking him an individual ticket to state.

    The girls team finished 12th, earning 177 points. They were led by Selah Binsfeld, who finished sixth overall for the Section 5 girls with a pursuit time of 35:14.8. Binsfeld’s placement was enough to earn a ticket to the state tournament.

    The 2024 MSHSL Nordic skiing state tournament will take place on Feb. 14 and 15 at Giant’s Ridge Golf and Ski Resort in Biwabik.
