Paper cherries, cardboard boxes and a lot of glue: Elementary students are using their creativity in the Minnesota Destination Imagination tournament.

The Lakeview Elementary team won first place in the Minnesota Destination Imagination tournament, which means they qualified for the global competition. To go on this trip, the team needed $5,500 to register and about $6,000 for lodging.

The team was able to reach their fundraising goal and the children will compete in May for the Destination Imagination Global Finals in Kansas City.

The students are fourth and fifth graders Emmanuel Ambrocio, Jr., Aini Muridi, Maslah Abshir, Sebastian Colthorpe, Arena Khoun, Kayden Gorder and Will Larsen. They competed in the fine arts portion of Destination Imagination.

Teacher Jennifer Hollander told the Sun Post she would do things like demonstrate how to use a hot glue gun, but grown-ups couldn’t actually build the set.

The children wrote an eight-minute skit inspired by the “Spoonbridge and Cherry” at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. All the props, set design and costumes were their own. They came up with their own team name: The Awesome Opossums. For the global competition, the children hope to add a worm puppet.
