Cocktails and candles: three years ago on April 25, Flicker & Fizz was launched with a party in Jessica Berglin’s Robbinsdale garage. Three years later, the business has continued.

Flicker & Fizz is a one-woman show selling candles made in vintage glassware.

Berglin sells handcrafted candles at craft markets – mainly in Minneapolis. She also offers candle-making workshops at Carver Junk Company in Chaska and HINDES in Golden Valley.

At a workshop, each person picks out a pair of vintage glasses to serve as their candle holders. Then they follow Berglin’s guidance to craft their own stuff. Classes last an hour, but the candle needs to set for 90 minutes. So Berglin takes that time to show people how to make a cocktail that pairs with their candle.

“[Flicker & Fizz is] really focusing on crafting an item that’s more of an experience to enjoy than a thing that’s going to live on a shelf,” Berglin said. “It’s really fun to watch their excitement grow as they realize there’s the cocktail pairing with each set.”

The candle making turns into a social experience. If the class takes place at a business, students can shop.

“It’s fun to partner with different retail spaces because during the time that they’re waiting for their candle set...they can also shop at the local businesses that I’ve partnered with,” Berglin explained to the Sun Post.

Vintage glasses can be beautiful, but Berglin said they’re also more sustainable than traditional candle vessels that might go to a landfill after a single use. When someone’s Flicker & Fizz candles are all used up, they are left with two glasses. Maybe they’ll use those glasses for cocktails or come back to Berglin for a refill.

To kick off three-year anniversary celebrations on Thursday, April 25, Berglin scheduled a Candle Making + Mixology Workshop at the Carver Junk Company. Tickets sold for $75.

Berglin’s business will be at a couple of upcoming, free-to-attend markets in Minneapolis.

From 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 26, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27, Flicker & Fizz will be at the LAB Mpls Collective Spring Market at the Historic Loring Corners Alleyway in Minneapolis.

More info can be found at labmpls.com/events.

From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11, as well as 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 12, Flicker & Fizz will be at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden Art Fair at Walker Art Center. Learn more at homespunevents.com/sculpturegardenartfair.

Looking into the future, Berglin hopes to host more private parties such as ladies night parties or bridal showers. Berglin also hopes to open up a studio/retail space in Robbinsdale.
