The Breck boys tennis team took part in the Class A state tournament last week at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis, taking part in both the team tournament and the individual tournament.

The team took second overall and Paddy Greene was the team’s top individual finisher taking fourth in the singles bracket.

    Team

Second seed Breck began the Class A state team tournament with a 5-2 win over unseeded Foley on June 4. The win featured strong opening performances for the week from Dylan Warn and Greene as first and second singles. Enrico Petto and partner Ben O’Brien earned Breck their most confident doubles win on the day as first doubles.

The Mustangs then stepped things up the following day with a 6-1 win over third seed Mound Westonka to qualify for the final. Warn and Green won their matchups in two again, while freshman Enzo Petto earned a win through a tiebreaker in the second set.

All three doubles pairs won their matches, including a three-set battle by Henry Parkhurst and Jack Pleasants (6-0, 4-6, 10-6).

The team tournament ended short of glory for Breck with a 6-1 loss to St. Paul Academy in the Class A final on June 5. Warn earned the team’s one win via a 6-2 set one win and a retirement from set two by his competitor.

    Individuals

Warn entered the individual state tournament unseeded in the individual tournament, beating fellow unseeded player Zack Lundeen of Redwood Valley 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. He then lost to St. Paul Academy’s Winston Arvidson in three sets in the quarterfinals.

Greene, unseeded, began his singles individual run with a big three-set win over third seed Isaac Thomforde from Crookston. He faced a 6-4 loss but responded with two 6-1 wins. Greene qualified for the semifinals with another three-set win over Wyatt Helberg of North Branch, winning set one 6-4 and set three 6-0. Greene’s thrilling run ended in the semifinals, losing 6-1, 6-1 to Zahir Hassan of St. Paul Academy, putting the Breck senior in the third-place game, where he lost a three-set battle with Rochester Lourdes’ Evan Ritter to take fourth place overall.

Enrico Petto and Enzo Petto lost their first-round match as an unseeded pair in the Class A doubles individual tournament. They moved to the consolation tournament, beating a duo from Redwood Valley 6-2, 6-1 to reach the semifinals. They lost 6-4, 7-5 to Cotters’ Hamilton Brewer and Logan Granseth in an action-packed semifinal to conclude their seasons.

Enrico Petto and Greene were Breck’s two seniors this year and ended their high school careers having impressed for years. Both were parts of four state qualifying teams and made three state final appearances.
