Looking for a cool side job? The Minneapolis Park Board is currently hiring umpires and officials. They're not desperate, but they do say the need to add people is significant.

"We are able to cover a vast majority of our league in terms of both adults and youth operations any given night, but we are stretched extremely thin," says Jordan Nelson with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

What kind of person are they looking for?

"We look for anybody who wants to be involved, who has a passion for sports, who has a passion for working in the city in with the different communities that we have and that we serve," says Nelson. "We're open to any and all. We offer a lot of training."

That training could involve seeing immediate action.

"Somebody can walk in, fill out the paperwork that very night, get an in-class session with us and then somebody might be able to get on the field that night," Nelson explains.

They'll conduct a background check since youth leagues are involved, provide excellent training, and good pay.

"If somebody works a game solo versus if we have multiple officials there, we also offer different rates based on the level of training and experience that they have," Nelson says. "So if somebody is potentially working for the State High School League and also wants to work in our leagues, we compensate them more."
