Over the past handful of years Netflix has found a way to create fresh and inventive sports content. From Formula 1’s Drive to Survive to Quarterback, the intimate docuseries shows have done incredibly well. Anthony Edwards is set to be the “breakaway act” for the upcoming NBA version of the show. Fresh off signing a contract extension with Adidas that pays over eight figures per year, Timberwolves All-NBA guard Anthony Edwards is apparently a major star of the new NBA show on Netflix set to release in the fall, according to industry sources. Edwards is expected to be the breakaway act of Netflix’s first NBA documentary series that includes LeBron James , Jayson Tatum , Jimmy Butler and Domantas Sabonis . James’ SpringHill Company led the production of the series along with Barack Obama’s Higher Ground Productions and Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions. The show is modeled after Netflix’s NFL “Quarterback” series.

Why fix it if it ain’t broke, right? That’s Netflix’s motto right now, with these sports docs. Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson is prominently featured in Receiver . Kirk Cousins starred in “Quarterback” before that. Full Swing is a golf version of the same concept, and it makes sense that production companies involved with past iterations are behind this offering.
What exactly Charania is getting at by dubbing Edwards the “ breakaway act ” remains to be seen. Of course Edwards has rose to prominence with his play on the court, but it’s hard to see him in a bigger limelight than James. Unless Edwards is a focal point for multiple episodes, are getting a standalone show of his own, then he’ll still be trumped by James in popularity.
No matter how all of this shakes out, Netflix appears to be taking care of basketball fans. By the time Anthony Edwards takes the court next season, he could be an Olympics gold medalist and a move star.
