Delta cancels hundreds more flights Tuesday, now faces federal investigation

Passengers traveling with Delta Airlines continue to face cancellations on the fifth day of complications sparked by the global IT outage last Friday, and it's possible that cancellation may last throughout this week.

As of 7 a.m. today, Delta had canceled 43 arrival flights and 20 departure flights at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, making up most of the canceled flights from the airport. CNN reports that as of 6 a.m., 383 Delt flights have been canceled in total.

The issues stem from last week's Microsoft outage caused by software company CrowdStrike. While other airlines have been able to recover since then, Delta continues to have problems with its crew tracking system, according to a press statement released by the company's CEO, Ed Bastian, on Sunday.

The continued cancellations have caused Delta's stocks to decline steadily, with Tuesday's stocks showing a decrease of 3.54% as of Monday at 4 p.m.

According to CNN , in a video message sent to employees on Monday, Bastian warns the cancellations could continue throughout the week but that the IT staff will be working "around the clock" to fix these issues.

The government seems to have taken notice of Delta's problems too. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has opened an investigation into the airline company to "ensure the airline is following the law and taking care of its passengers during continued widespread disruptions."

Delta has not responded to the news of this investigation as of this time.
