A handful of members from the Minneapolis City Council are releasing an updated plan for public safety beyond policing amid calls from the public for more oversight.

This comes a week after the Minneapolis City Council passed a contract agreement for the city's police officers, which includes a pay raise of nearly 22 percent.

Councilmember Robin Wonsley says this is a check-in to hold administrators accountable to the public's concerns.

"To create a blueprint for Minneapolis and how we can move from a police-only public safety system, to one that includes, again, a full range of preventative responsive and restorative services to meet the public safety needs of our residents in both an equitable and effective way," Wonsley.

Although the the city’s budget remains tight, city council members say they will continue to get creative with finding funding and stay committed to the plan.

This comes almost a year after city leaders announced a new comprehensive public safety reform plan . City Council members claim there has been little to no movement on the plan.

City Council President Elliot Payne says the city owes it to residents to give them a timeline on when the changes will begin.

"We need to transition from words to actions," says Payne. "And one of the most critical pieces of transitioning to action is making sure that we have strong oversight over those actions to make sure that we're delivering on those promises."
