Outside of film festivals, it's not often that a celebration of local talent hits the big screen repeatedly. But we'll get a little of that this week, with an anniversary screening of Purple Rain and the MN Made film series bringing in a local director to discuss their documentary at The Main Cinema.
Here are details on those events and three other movies to see this week that don't feature Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds.
Prince's iconic film was released in theaters on July 27, 1984. Its 40th anniversary will celebrated with a massive screening at the Target Center featuring "historic memorabilia from the Purple Rain era" put on display and Prince collaborators lined up for appearances. Target Center, 600 N 1st Ave, Minneapolis ($19.99)
A new restoration of the 1991 film arrives in town this week. The film follows the kidnapping of a logging manager and later after Canadian courts refuse to stop the clear-cutting of forests on First Nations land. The Trylon, 2820 E 33rd St, Minneapolis ($8)
Few movies demand to be seen on the big screen like The Matrix . Here's your chance to see leather daddy Jesus dodge bullets the way the once cutting-edge effects require. We'll just pretend like The Matrix Resurrections never happened. Riverview Theater, 3800 42nd Ave. S, Minneapolis ($5)
Trailer-O-Rama presents a huge collection of trailers on 35mm, including "rarities we can't normally play." The night will run through trailers from the '30s to the '60s and include trivia and prizes. It's a unique event and a chance to see some things you probably won't see again. The Parkway Theater, 4814 Chicago Ave., Minneapolis ($10 in advance/$13 at the door)
MSP Film Society presents The Starfish Throwers and a conversation with filmmaker Jesse Roseler as part of its MN Made series. The documentary follows a chef, a 12-year-old girl, and a retired school teacher as they individually tackle the global hunger crisis against seemingly impossible odds. The Main Cinema, 115 SE Main St., Minneapolis ($10)
