Watch: Twins' Royce Lewis homers off Cy Young favorite in second game back from injury

Royce Lewis officially made his return to the Minnesota Twins, homering in his second game back from injury.

Facing off against Detroit Tigers ace and Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal, Lewis turned on the first pitch he saw, hammering it 402 feet over the centerfield wall. It was his 11th home run of the year and first since June 21.

Throughout his short career, Lewis has shown a penchant for delivering home runs after missing extended periods with injury. Earlier in the year, Lewis homered in his first at-bat back with the Twins after missing 58 games with a quadriceps injury suffered on Opening Day. Though, following another stint on the IL, it took him two games to finally go deep.

In late June, he was diagnosed with a right adductor strain, which cost him 16 games. Lewis returned on Friday but wasn't able to homer or knock in a run, finishing 1-for-5 in Minnesota's 9-3 win over the Tigers.

Staying on the field has been a struggle for the 25-year-old, not only this season but since making his MLB debut in 2022. With that in mind, Lewis has made changes to his diet and workout routines, but with August approaching, he's played in only 26 games.

“I do all the stuff off the field that takes time away from my family and friends," Lewis told Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com . "There's not much else I can really do at this point other than keep fighting through it. I'm not made of glass.”

Lewis has managed to take the field for just 95 games over three major league seasons. That is a shame for the former first-round pick and the Twins, as he's proven capable of big things when healthy.

Heading into Saturday's action, Lewis was slashing .300/.359/.660 with a 1.006 OPS for his career. Meanwhile, his home run against the Tigers gave him the sixth-most (28) by a player in their first 96 MLB contests, per MLB.com's Sarah Langs .
