The Minnesota Twins have continued to cry poor since the culmination of the 2023 Major League Baseball Postseason. That narrative isn’t changing at the trade deadline either. It could make any additions somewhat difficult.

Cash strapped at the trade deadline is ugly look for Minnesota Twins

Derek Falvey had to build a roster this offseason while watching his bosses decrease spending by $30 million. Fans were excited after the most successful season in decades. They have been rewarded with payroll limitations and unable to watch games on television . In contention for another American League Central Division title, additions could be difficult before the July 30th trade deadline.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale suggests that ownership is still unwilling to spend on the roster. Addition with subtraction is the suggestion as Nightengale points out Minnesota needs to dump a contract.

Nightengale isn’t alone in his reporting either. Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press echoes a similar sentiment .

At least by Twins standards, people who know say the team suddenly is tight on cash. The Twins rank No. 23 in attendance, averaging 23,303 per Target Field game. Last year, the Twins averaged 24,372, 19th in baseball.

The comment is an interesting one, given Twins ownership having consistently been chided for their lack of spending. Despite increasing payrolls in previous seasons, they decided to scale back at about the worst time possible.

Minnesota Twins are making grave shortsighted mistakes

Since the end of last season public relations messages have been awful from the Minnesota Twins. The whole gets deeper each time Joe Pohlad or Dave St. Peter offer quotes, and fans have taken notice. The frustration regarding a lack of investment in the team is palpable, and it’s not something that the franchise should expect to immediately reign in.

After excitement was so high following last season, fans have waned at the gate. A lack of interest without easily accessible television avenues is a problem as well. By continuing to thwart opportunities to better the roster, Minnesota may turn off a portion of fans that they won’t regain. Despite being within sniffing distance of the Cleveland Guardians and having an easier road ahead, doing nothing to invigorate the roster or fan base seems like an incredible misstep.
