Twins projected to land valuable starter from Rockies at trade deadline

The Minnesota Twins are not likely to make a major splash this year at the trade deadline, but are expected to make some incremental upgrades. One area they could look to improve is their starting rotation. They lost Sonny Gray in the offseason and Pablo Lopez hasn't been able to repeat his 2023 success.

Fortunately, there is a buy-low candidate who could help the Twins out. MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince predicted that Minnesota will be the ones to end up with the Colorado Rockies' best starting pitching asset .

"The Twins need a starter but probably won't break the bank," Castrovince wrote Monday. "The Rockies' (Cal) Quantrill is a starter who won't break the bank."

Quantrill, 29, has been a serviceable option for the Rockies this year. In 21 starts, he is 7-7 with a 4.09 ERA over 114 1/3 innings of work. He also has recorded 86 strikeouts and posted a 1.34 WHIP.

The right-hander wouldn't be a major upgrade for the Twins, but as noted by Castrovince, he also won't cause them to break the bank and lose a ton of prospects. He also is familiar with the American League Central thanks to his days with the Cleveland Guardians.

Over the course of his career, Quantrill owns a record of 42-30 and 3.88 ERA over 685 total innings.

The Twins currently sit in the second AL Wild Card spot. They are also just 4 1/2 games back of the Guardians, who lead the AL Central and have the best record in the entire AL. Quantrill might give them a better chance of chasing down their division rivals for the top spot.
