Here’s how to vote early in Minnesota’s primary election

Minnesotans can now vote early in Minnesota’s 2024 primary election, which is on Aug. 13.

To be eligible to vote, a person must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on election day, a resident of Minnesota for 20 days, not under a court order prohibiting them from voting and not currently incarcerated for a felony.

This will be the first statewide primary election that felons will be able to participate in as long as they are not currently incarcerated. In 2023, the Minnesota Legislature passed a law restoring voting rights to people with felony convictions on probation, parole or work release.

Minnesotans can register to vote at mnvotes.org . Early voting begins 46 days before an election, and Minnesotans can vote by mail, early in-person or on the day of the Primary Election. Voters can request an absentee ballot through the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website. Ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on election day. Voters can check the status of their ballot here.

Among the most closely watched primary races statewide includes who will win the Republican primary for U.S. Senate: Republican-endorsed candidate Royce White or military veteran Joe Fraser. The winner will face incumbent Sen. Amy Klobuchar in November’s general election as she’s expected to handily win in the Democratic primary.

The Republican primary in the 2nd Congressional District will also draw attention, as voters decide between Republican-endorsed candidate Tayler Rahm and former federal prosecutor Joe Teirab .

The most contested primary election for Democrats is in the 5th Congressional District between Rep. Ilhan Omar and former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels . Omar narrowly beat Samuels by about two percentage points in the 2022 Democratic primary.
