(The Center Square) – Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz dedicated a new veterans home in Bemidji on Monday.

This is the third veterans home opened this year, with one in both Montevideo and Preston creating nearly 200 new residences. The state Department of Veterans Affairs looks to provide advanced nursing care for both the disabled and aging.

“We have an obligation to meet the needs of our veterans and the opening of the Bemidji Veterans Home is a reflection of our commitment to fulfill that obligation,” Walz said. “Together with MDVA we are providing necessary support and resources to ensure the wellbeing of veterans across Minnesota.”

Minnesota is the first state to open three homes simultaneously, according to Walz.

To be admitted into a VA care home, residents must be honorably discharged from any military service branch, a current resident of Minnesota, and have served 181 days in consecutive active duty unless discharged due to disability. Spouses who are at least 55 years old are also eligible, and both veteran and spouse must show a medical need for advanced care.

Those interested in applying can reach out to their county veteran service officer, or email NewHomesAdmissions@state.mn.us.
