Six Minnesota breweries took home accolades in the U.S. Open Beer Championship .

The competition judges more than 9,000 beers across 170 different styles and recognized some familiar names in Minnesota brewing as well as a couple of the state's more recently opened brew pubs.

Spilled Grain Brewhouse and Lupulin Brewing were the most-awarded breweries in the state, taking home three medals each.

Other breweries adding the award to their collections included the Minneapolis -based Venn Brewing, Fridley -based Forgotten Star Brewery, the recently opened Haggard Barrel Brewing, and Chanhassen 's Hackamore Brewing, which was honored in two categories.

Three of those breweries grabbed gold medals, with Spilled Grain's Bearded Man beer grabbing gold in the Old/Strong Ale category for the second straight year. The company also took home a silver in a non-alcoholic category for its root beer.

Golds also went to Forgotten Star's Starstryker in the Belgian Strong Blonde Ale category and Haggard's lactose-free sour ale, Glonky, took top honors in the Smoothie Sour category.

The award was an impressive statement for Haggard Barrel, as the brewery doesn't have a taproom and just began selling its beers in January.

In neighboring states, six Wisconsin breweries, including Lakefront, 1840, and Stevens Point, grabbed medals, as did two (Dakota Point and Spearfish) in South Dakota and four in Iowa, including multiple honors for Full Fledged Brewing and Toppling Goliath, which placed in the top 10 breweries overall.

Here are all the Minnesota breweries that took home awards.

    • Hackamore Brewing: Potbelly won silver in the Oatmeal Stout category and Saturday Morning Cartoons won bronze in the Breakfast Stout category.
