Xcel Energy: Work to restore power could stretch into Tuesday

    By Declan Desmond,

Sunday's overnight barrage of wind, rain and hail left a trail of damage to the power grid that may take another two days to fully repair.

That's according to the latest update from Xcel Energy, which says 1,250 line workers and support staff are now working to restore power.

"Due to the severity of the storm damage, we expect some outages to extend into Monday, and work may continue into Tuesday for some customers," the company said.

In the meantime, Xcel is asking people to stay clear of any downed lines or utility poles.

According to the latest outage maps, nearly 53,000 customers are still without power in Minnesota, with most of those affected in the Twin Cities area. That's down from the more than 170,000 who lost power overnight .

The outages also impacted the Rochester and St. Cloud areas, among others.

The damage comes after storms blasted into the Twin Cities early Sunday morning as they traveled southeast along the I-94 corridor, with baseball-sized hail pounding the Monticello area and trees reportedly uprooted in Sartell.

More storms are possible in western Minnesota Sunday evening, while southeastern Minnesota and Wisconsin could be under the gun again on Monday.

You can check the status of the outages on Xcel Energy's website.
