MILWAUKEE — The Biden/Harris campaign used the backdrop of the Republican National Convention to highlight the abortion issue.

A morning news conference Wednesday featured a trio of speakers including Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Congresswoman Veronica Escobar from Texas. Providing a real-world experience that reflected views on the abortion debate was reproductive rights advocate Amanda Zurawski of Austin, Texas who shared her ordeal with a life-threatening failed pregnancy.

“In the spring of 2022 I became pregnant,” she said. “Then after four months I was told the baby would not survive.”

Although there was a danger to Zurawski’s health, doctor’s were reluctant to act because Texas law prohibited abortions unless there was “a life-threatening physical condition aggravated, caused by, or arising from a pregnancy that places the female at risk of death or poses a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function.”

Despite the stated exception, the law was considered vague and fearing criminal prosecution, doctors were cautious as was the case with Zurawski. As a result, Zurawski suffered life-threatening infections.

“Sepsis set in and I was in intensive care before the doctor was able to act,” she said. “I crashed again with another bout of sepsis and was transferred into the ICU.

“I was there for three day and my family flew in from across the country for fear I would not make it through,” she said.

“What I went through was nothing short of barbaric, but it didn’t need to happen,” Zurawski said. “It did because of Donald Trump.”

Zurawski said it is unthinkable that anyone should have to go through what she did.

“Trump’s running mate, J. D. Vance, is a man with a record just as extreme and an agenda just as threatening as Donald Trump’s,” she said. “He is so extreme he doesn’t think there should be exceptions for rape or incest. He thinks two wrongs don’t make a right.”

Throughout the country, Zurawski said, women are being told they are not sick enough to get health care treatment they need.

“We are told we must flee our state borders to get the health care we need,” she said. “We have been robbed of our freedom.

“That’s why we must reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris.”
