    Minnesota's new state flag flies in the stratosphere

    Minnesota's new state flag traveled up its tallest flagpole yet: more than 18 miles above the ground.


    Driving the news: U of M researchers Ilic and James Flaten attached the banner to a balloon their team launched into the stratosphere last week.

    The big picture: Scientists are searching for lightweight materials that could protect electronic equipment in space.

    • The U's team tested nanocomposite materials to see how they responded to extreme temperatures and radiation, Ilic told Axios.
