Donald Trump’s campaign is apparently running on the platform that felons can run for president but shouldn’t be able to vote. In an attempt to lay into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ newly announced VP pick, the Republican nominee’s campaign released a statement criticizing Walz for “embracing policies to allow convicted felons to vote.” Trump has been charged in four criminal cases over a five month span, and was convicted of 34 felony counts by a New York City jury for his hush money case in May. The statement is in line with Team Trump’s emerging strategy of trying to paint the Midwesterner as a “West Coast wannabe” who is soft on crime and “dangerously liberal.” Trump’s campaign posted a stream of attacks on Walz Tuesday morning, including denouncing his support for the mostly peaceful but occasionally destructive racial justice protests during the Black Lives Matter movement; and trying to link Walz’s progressive immigration policies to nearly non-existent trends in “migrant crime.”Read it at The Daily BeastRead more at The Daily Beast.

After Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was chosen as Kamala Harris’s running mate, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders immediately attacked him—only to get trolled by the internet. “In her first big decision Kamala reveals who she answers to—the far left,” Sanders posted on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday morning. The replies to her tweet quickly called her out. Several commentators pointed out the contrast between their records as governors—Sanders loosened child labor protections while Walz made school lunches free. Even their photo ops with children show disappointment versus happiness. Others pointed out the absurdity of calling Walz “far left”—as if that attack line would work on a military veteran, high school football coach, and teacher. These early attacks, along with a panicked angry email from the Trump campaign, show that the GOP doesn’t have much of an attack line against Walz right now. It’s fitting that the man who coined the Democrats’ favorite “weird” criticism of Republicans isn’t easily attacked himself. On top of that, Trump and Republicans still haven’t come up with a good way to attack Harris. The only question is whether all of this will lead to Democrats retaining the White House in November.

On Monday, Survey USA and UMass Amherst both released surveys showing the Democratic candidate winning over more likely voters than the former president, a stark turnaround from before she entered the race last month. According to Survey USA, Harris earns the support of 48% of likely voters while Trump earns the backing of 45%. According to Umass Amherst, the vice president has a 46% to 43 % lead over the GOP candidate; in January, the same pollster found Trump leading President Joe Biden by 43% to 39%.
