Vice President Kamala Harris has named Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, perhaps the biggest decision she has made since launching her campaign a little over two weeks ago.

    Now what?

Walz’s elevation to the ticket is not — yet — official. But beyond the implications for the presidential race, it could have a dramatic impact on his home state’s politics as well.

Here are some of your questions answered about what comes next.

    So when is it official?

Okay, so Walz isn’t officially the Democratic nominee for vice president yet. Harris’ selection has to be ratified by Democratic delegates before he is added to the ticket — a similar process to how Harris was named the nominee. And both Harris and Walz have to say they accept the nomination to make it official.

That won’t take long. Officials with the Democratic National Committee have said they intend to have the ticket nominated by Wednesday to adhere to a since-changed ballot-access deadline in Ohio. They announced the results of the virtual roll call for president late Monday, saying that 99 percent of delegates had cast their ballots for Harris.

So if you’re looking for some last-minute drama, this almost assuredly won’t be it.

Sure, the delegates could theoretically buck Harris’ pick and install someone else, but let’s be real for a second: That’s not going to happen!

When will Walz hit the campaign trail?

Harris and her new running mate are embarking on a battleground state tour that kicks off Tuesday evening in Philadelphia. Through the end of the week, they’re set to barnstorm in western Wisconsin, Detroit, Raleigh, North Carolina, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

A planned stop in Savannah, Georgia, has been postponed, with Tropical Storm Debby, which made landfall as a hurricane in Florida on Monday, expected to dump a potentially historic amount of rain on the Southeast this week.

    What about the convention?

Historically, the vice presidential nominee headlines the penultimate night of the convention.

And while no official schedule has been rolled out yet, expect to see Walz take the stage in Chicago on Aug. 21 because it's traditional for the vice presidential candidate to give their acceptance speech on the second-to-last night of the convention.

Does Walz have to resign from office now?

No — Walz will remain governor while running, and will only have to resign from office if he wins the vice presidency.

So who gets his seat if he wins?

Should the ticket win, Walz would have to resign from the governorship sometime between Election Day and inauguration.

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan would then assume the governorship for the remainder of Walz’s term. Flanagan ran alongside Walz in 2022, where the two easily defeated the Republican ticket.

Flanagan would be eligible to seek a term of her own in 2026. If she takes Walz's place, she would be the first woman governor of Minnesota and would be the first woman with Native American heritage to ever be governor in any state.
