Chuck Todd Says Kamala Harris Chose ‘Younger Version’ of Joe Biden with Tim Walz as VP

NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd argued that Vice President Kamala Harris chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) as her running mate because he’s a “younger version” of President Joe Biden.

Todd joined MSNBC’s Ana Cabrera on Tuesday to react to news that Harris chose Walz as her running mate. Reports indicated Walz and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) were among the finalists in the vetting process. Todd argued Walz is closer to Harris with his politics and he described Shapiro as more of a “centrist.”

“Walz and her I think sort of share the same — drive in the same lane. I don’t think either of them are Bernie Sanders progressives, but I don’t think either one of them are sort of Joe Manchin centrists either. There sort of where Joe Biden is really, and Tim Walz is a younger, in that sense, a younger version of Joe Biden, very much in the mainstream liberal lane of the party,” Todd said.

Before dropping his reelection campaign and endorsing Harris, Biden, 81, was facing scrutiny from some within his own party over concerns about his age and stamina. Walz is 60 years old.

Todd noted a Shapiro or fellow candidate finalist Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) could have helped Harris in appealing to a different wing of the party, but she chose someone who instead could better articulate the same vision and policies. He also argued Shapiro had the “thinnest” political resume of all the finalists.

“At the end of the day, it’s her pick and it does look to me like she picked someone that, number one, could defend her, number two, could articulate her vision and it’s hard to pick someone to articulate your vision if they don’t share your vision,” Todd said. “And perhaps she didn’t think a Josh Shapiro would be as comfortable doing that as a Tim Walz.”
