Politico Breaks Down the 4 Reasons Why Kamala Harris Picked Tim Walz For Her Veep

Now that Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) as her running mate, many are speculating what went into her decision and what gave Walz the edge over all the other options she had. Politico narrowed it down to four points.

Politico’s Eugene Daniels , Elena Schneider , Holly Otterbein , and Christopher Cadelago spoke to “two people close to the process” on Tuesday after the news was official, and this was what they found out :

Walz’s record: “Harris appreciated Walz’s two terms as governor because he had accomplishments in Minnesota that Harris wants to replicate in her presidency — access to reproductive health, paid leave, child tax credits and gun safety.” In March, Harris became the first sitting Vice President (or President) to visit an abortion provider when she made a public appearance at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Minnesota. At her side — Gov. Walz.

His biography: Before he was governor, Walz was a high school social studies teacher and football coach , as well as a veteran of the National Guard. He was also a member of Congress who flipped a red district blue.

He made “weird” happen: All that “weird” talk about former President Donald Trump and his running mate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH)? That originated with Walz , and the Harris campaign definitely noticed how it took off and became “a cutting and clear tagline that went viral over the last two weeks,” as Politico put it.

And finally — they straight-up just liked each other. Politico wrote: “Kamala Harris loved Tim Walz’s governing record in Minnesota. His biography and record of winning tough races resonated with her. And most of all, she just really liked him.”
