Nobody knew what to expect when the Minnesota Vikings took the football field in New York, for their week one matchup vs the Giants. There were too many unknowns surrounding the 2024 season, to pretend that any type of projection could be accurately drawn up.
But, some people have jobs to do. Like the oddsmakers in Vegas, who are paid to come up with NFL future win totals and division winners way before games are ever played. So, that’s what Vegas brains did, back in April, after the Vikings let Kirk Cousins walk, signed Sam Darnold and drafted their QB of the future.
Nobody believed in the Minnesota Vikings
The unknown is scary. Thus, the Vikings were pinned at 6.5 victories, by far the least in the NFC North. To some, a 6.5 over/under win total wasn’t all that surprising. With a former No. 3 overall pick-turned-bust, at quarterback, unproven interior lines and a completely turned over defense, many expected Minnesota to struggle vs the Giants.
Of course, that’s not what happened. Instead, Sam Darnold balled out . Aaron Jones ran roughshod all over the Meadowlands and Flores’ defense suffocated any chance the Giants had offensively.
Meanwhile, in Green Bay Packers land, an anvil of reality was dropped over the weekend. After living in a fairy tail world all offseason, where they were propped up as true competitors for the Detroit Lions, in the NFC North, where Jordan Love was already crowned as the third coming of Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.
Those Packers played the Philadelphia Eagles, in the NFL’s Friday special for opening week, where they lost the game 34-29 , and their starting QB to injury. With their game already over, heartbroken Green Bay fans put their Packers jerseys back on, and flipped over to FOX on Sunday, hoping Sam Darnold would make them feel better about life.

I can only imagine what it was like in Packer households across the country. How sweet it would have been to taste those tears. But wait… you can. Could you think of any better way to start a day than watching this video? It’s like everything he believed in was suddenly crumbling right before his eyes. As if a dedicated follower just found out his deity doesn’t exist.
Football fans across the NFL, who do not wake up everyday and drink purple kool-aid through a SKOL squiggly straw, had no reason to think Sam Darnold would slice and dice the Giants defense 17 different ways, in week one.

Nobody expected Sam Darnold to play at an MVP level in the first half vs the Giants. Most didn’t think Aaron Jones, at 30-years-old, would stomp on and run through the New York defense, like he did. Thus, the reaction above.
Hell, the Vikings defense put up more points than the New York offense. It was a beautiful Sunday. Now, can the Minnesota Vikings do that again? Can the even muster anything similar in week two, vs a much more difficult opponent? That is the question.
