The Minnesota Twins have fallen apart down the stretch and their playoff hopes are on life support . That caused Carlos Correa to call out his teammates after their Monday loss to the Miami Marlins. He didn’t name anyone specifically, but Royce Lewis wasn’t sure what to think.

The Minnesota Twins are certainly feeling the effects of a team full of young players trying to stay afloat . It has been a grind for the likes of Edouard Julien, Jose Miranda, Brooks Lee, and Royce Lewis. Carlos Correa’s comments appeared to be directed at them , and Lewis told the Star Tribune they are doing everything they can.

“To rely on all of us young guys who have not done that and expect us to perform at a high level when our bodies are trying to figure this thing out as we go, I think that is definitely challenging. I think [Correa] hit it on the mark. In terms of lack of performance or whatever, we’re giving it our all. To say that people aren’t working, that’s a little tough to hear, but we’re definitely getting after it and we’re doing everything we can. Hopefully, we’re not playing too much of a game before a game, so we’re not tired for those at-bats. But for me, it worked [Tuesday]. I’m going to keep doing whatever I need to do. I’ll wear [myself] out if I need to get out there and perform.”

A ton of pressure has been placed on Lewis this season. After all, he has been an incredible performer and the grand slam man. That doesn’t negate that this is basically he rookie season , and he has never played in more than 58 games at the big league level.

There is also a level of fairness for Lewis to be frustrated in hearing a level of work ethic questions. After all, Carlos Correa will play in the fewest amount of games he has since 2019. After playing at an All-Star level through the first half, the highly-compensated shortstop spent months on the shelf because he wore shoes that hurt his feet .

The entire situation, playing out in the media as it is, reflects a clubhouse that understands their urgency went fruitless . Minnesota’s first losing month came during the final flip of the calendar this season. They watched the Detroit Tigers pass them by. They are going to miss the playoffs. It’s all incredibly frustrating.

When looking for blame to place this season, it’s a pretty straightforward process . The Pohlad family failed to invest in their product . The team failed to stay healthy and produce. The manager failed to pull the right strings. The front office failed to add the right reinforcements. There’s going to be a dark cloud over this one until things turn in 2025 and beyond.

Royce Lewis and Carlos Correa will figured out a way to move past this together. For now though, they are both key cogs on a sinking ship, grasping at straws.
