The Minnesota Timberwolves made a blockbuster deal just days before the 2024-25 NBA season kicks off. When they sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks, it was largely due to their luxury tax implications . That doesn’t mean Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo aren’t ready to contribute for their new team.

Donte DiVincenzo announces his presence for the Minnesota Timberwolves

Just two more preseason games exist for the Minnesota Timberwolves before the regular season starts. On Sunday night they matched up against the New York Knicks and Donte DiVincenzo had a message for his former team. Unhappy with his role there, the new opportunity in Minnesota was a welcomed change .

“Thank you for the trade Thibs. Thank you for the trade… that’s what happens when they let you run the show. That’s what happens when they let you run the show”

    Donte DiVincenzo to Tom Thibodeau

Tom Thibodeau was the Minnesota Timberwolves head coach up until his firing in 2019. He now is the head coach of the New York Knicks. It’s clear DiVincenzo wasn’t a big fan of his leadership while playing for him last season. He finished the exhibition contest with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Last season, his first with the Knicks, DiVicenzo played a career-high 29.1 minutes per game. His 15.5 points per game was also a career-high, but that didn’t stop Thibodeau from bringing him off the bench. It’s uncertain as to how Chris Finch will utilize DiVincenzo in Minnesota, but the scorer wants to be on the court.

The Timberwolves needed another scorer last season, and they have added a pair of shooters this offseason. Both DiVincenzo and veteran Joe Ingles can pour in the points. If DiVincenzo brings this level of tenacity throughout the regular season Anthony Edwards will have plenty of help as he pursues the next step.

It could take some time for the Timberwolves to gel together, but this is a collection that is focused on getting the job done. How Minnesota fares in the regular season remains to be seen, but they will be judged based on their playoff performance.
