Gus Scored Wild’s First Goalie Goal… but it Wasn’t His Idea

The Minnesota Wild have yet to trail in a game through their first four contests this season. They have carried three different goalies at times . Neither of those realities were the story after Filip Gustavsson sailed home a goalie goal on Tuesday night. The crazy part is that he didn’t even think to try it.

Marc-Andre Fluery gave Minnesota Wild Filip Gustavsson a good idea

By now you have probably seen the shot . With time running out in the third period, and the St. Louis Blues leaving the net empty, Filip Gustavvson flipped the puck over everyone on the ice. It sailed through the air and eventually nestled right into the opposing goal. The Wild were going to win 4-1.

There’s a very real possibility that The Gus Bus wasn’t even going to try and take the shot though. It wasn’t until veteran teammate and fellow netminder Marc-Andre Fleury got in his ear that the Minnesota goaltender considered it.

“I come to the bench here on the timeout and Fluery’s like, ‘hey, are you gunna try and shoot it if you get it now when we’re up two goals?’ I was like, yeah, actually I should shoot it. It was a perfect dump there to the goalie. I just catch it and just try to put it down as quick as possible. I didn’t know I could shoot it that far in the air, so it’s great it got in there.”

It’s beyond impressive that Gustavsson sank the shot in the first place. Of course the net was open, but flinging the puck that far down the ice and having it be on target from a goalie wrister is crazy. The reality that it was Fluery who prompted his teammate makes it that much more fun.
