As one of the greatest endurance athletes in the history of the Lake Conference, Hopkins junior Sydney Drevlow is a runner and skier the Royals can count on.

During the State Class AAA True Team Track and Field Meet May 17 in Stillwater, Drevlow competed in three events while leading the Royals to eighth place in the team standings. The highlight of her day was definitely the 800-meter run, in which Drevlow managed a narrow win over another track superstar, Minnetonka ninth-grader Evie Malec.

It was very close at the finish line with Drevlow crossing the line in 2:13.81 and Malec following in 2:13.86. How close is that?

One meet official said, “Less than half a step.”

“We haven’t qualified for state True Team in a while,” Drevlow said after her race victory. “This is awesome for our team. I am definitely proud of how well-rounded out team has become.”

Drevlow is the one person on the team that everyone looks up to. She is a tough competitor, but at the same time a good friend to all of her teammates and a great encourager for girls across a wide spectrum of events.

In True Team track and field, every girl on the team scores points.

Individually, Drevlow is one of the best runners in the state and has a range of sprints to the 3200-meter run. In the state True Team lineup, she was entered in three events - the 800, the 400 and the 4x400-meter relay. That is a tough triple for any athlete, regardless of her talent level.

Drevlow has had great success in running and Nordic skiing since she first became a varsity athlete in seventh grade. By the middle of her ninth-grade school year, she was already the state girls champion in Nordic skiing. The Hopkins star didn’t ski for the high school team last winter. She was skiing in several foreign countries against some of the world’s most prominent Nordics.

With running and skiing as dual passions, Drevlow said, “The sports are good cross training. I don’t ever feel burned out. For college, I will have to choose between running and skiing.”

But there’s no need to make the choice yet. Drevlow enjoys being with her Hopkins teammates and the True Team experience allowed her to share success with them.

“We came into the state meet as the 10th seed and finished eighth,” Hopkins head coach Andrea Yesnes noted. “We had not qualified for state since 2018.”

Next for the Hopkins girls is the Section 6AAA Meet. The objective there will be to qualify as many girls for state as possible. This is the time of year when athletes in Drevlow’s position think about individual section and state honors. Given her history of excellence, track fans can expect to see Drevlow near the front of the pack in state competition in early June at St. Michael-Albertville High.
