UNC Football: Opponent Preview - Minnesota
College football is back, y’all. While UNC didn’t have a Week 0 game to get in on the action early, fans won’t have to wait a whole extra week to see their team in action, as UNC will open their season Thursday night rather than the usual Saturday. They’ll do so in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, returning the favor after P.J. Fleck and the Golden Gophers came to Chapel Hill last September. That game was one of the highlights of UNC’s 2023 season, a 31-13 win that featured Nate McCollum going absolutely unconscious, two interceptions by the defense, and Drake Maye’s highest yardage total of the year. Both teams are going to look quite different nearly 365 days later. You can read all about UNC’s changes in our position preview series from over the last month — I might suggest starting with my breakdown of the quarterback room in a post-Maye world if you haven’t read them already. Here, let’s get into the team that’ll line up across from them.
U of M rejects divesting in Israel
(Minneapolis, MN) -- The University of Minnesota Board of Regents adopted a “neutrality policy” Tuesday, banning social issues from factoring into investment decisions except on “very rare occasions.” U-of-M junior Fae Hodges with Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) says the University is sending a message and enacting a policy that prevents the school’s community "from raising concerns with the Board on social and political issues related to the investments that they make with our tuition dollars.” The Board’s action formally declines student activists' request to divest from Israel-related investments. Under the new policy, those requesting divestment must demonstrate how the investment is fundamentally incompatible with the University’s core mission and values. Hodges says her group will "continue to do a lot of the same disruptive actions" because "we don't want to make the Regents' lives comfortable... while our tuition dollars are being spent on something that over 70 percent of the student body voted against."

College Football Teams Don’t Wait for the Season to End to Make an Adjustment; Your Company Shouldn’t Either
Labor Day signals the end of summer and the start of my two favorite things: seed corn harvest and college football. Many of you know that my undergraduate degree is from the University of Minnesota, which apparently means I am a Gopher fan for life. Being a fan of that team — or any team — is both an incredible blessing and a constant curse! I think anyone in the seed industry can relate, since every season includes at least one incredible win and at least one head-scratching loss.

Vikings waive first-round draft pick from UGA
In somewhat of a surprise, the Minnesota Vikings waived former first-round draft pick Lewis Cine on Tuesday. Cine, who played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs was selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft. Cine has had a tough start to his NFL career. He suffered a severe leg injury during his rookie season. He returned for the 2023 NFL season, but did not look like himself. He has played in 10 career NFL games and has one career tackle. Cine has primarily had a role on special teams. The former Georgia standout, who was defensive MVP of the 2022 national championship, had a promising performance this preseason. Cine recorded 11 tackles, one interception and a sack for the Vikings in one game. The #Vikings waived 2022 first-round draft pick safety Lewis Cine. — Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 27, 2024 Cine will almost certainly get another shot in the NFL. The only question is where. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety is just 24.
