MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — One downtown Minot bridge will be staying closed for a little while longer.

Concrete on the Third Street Bridge is spalling, or breaking away.

Minot City Leaders were planning on opening the Third Street bridge on July 3, but they’re waiting on an inspection from a Department of Transportation consultant.

Lance Meyer, an engineer for the City of Minot, says it appears the concrete on one of the piers has gotten worse over time.

Sen. Cramer calls President Biden’s extreme heat rules a desperate attempt

Meyer and the engineering department of Minot want to use the expertise of the bridge division in the engineering department at the DOT to see if the damage is as bad as it looks.

Both the DOT and the City of Minot engineering department share the same concerns about the bridge.

“Some of these spalls are getting pretty bad however we don’t really have enough information at this time to know if we can reopen that bridge at this time,” said Meyer.

Meyers adds the plan at this time is to keep the bridge closed and in a few weeks, the DOT will be sending AECOM to do a bridge inspection to determine what the load rating is or how much weight the pier can support.

He says the goal of this is to figure out what their next steps will be.
