How not to let mosquitos be a buzz kill this summer

NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Mosquitos can be a pain for many people who enjoy the summer months.

And while it might feel like getting a mosquito bite is inevitable, there are things you can do to prevent them.

Horticulture experts recommend planting herbs in places around your home to keep them away.

Planting lemon grass, lemon balm, mint, and other citrus plants can all deter the bugs away from human scent.

However, the same can not be said if you are planning on consuming alcohol.

Experts say just by drinking, especially beer, you’re more likely to get bit.

And if you’re wondering why your friend is getting chowed down on more than you are, it could be because they have type-O blood, which mosquitos are attracted to.

But in order to fight them off the best you can remember: drain, dress, and defend.

“You drain any standing water from your yard. If you have a birdbath or anything that collects water, drain it once a week,” said Agriculture and Natural Resources-Horticulture Extension Agent for NDSU Ward County, Emily How. “Another thing is you can dress. So, dressing in light colors and having appropriate long sleeves and long pants. Defending yourself would be using things such as bug spray or a deet to actually keep the bugs off of you.”

Minot city workers will be conducting ariel spraying missions for mosquito control between July 15-19, which will generally take place between the hours of 9 p.m. and 2 a.m., weather permitting.
