NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — If you are looking for a missing child, an elderly person with dementia, or just helping with an investigation, you can use the North Dakota Highway Patrol man trailing K9 team services at no cost to you.

K9s Blue, Judge, and Loris were put to the task of finding a Minot man who volunteered to help out with training.

All three dogs found the “missing individual” on two trails.

The training helps the dogs be more accurate and helps build their intensity while running the trails.

Troopers say man-trailing dogs can pick up a specific scent and find a person they’re after.

Even though they’re born with a good nose, Trooper Steven Mayer says these pups need plenty of practice.

“A minimum of 16 hours a month, we do two-hour blocks once a week, at least once a week. And then a full eight-hour day once a month, the three of us get together and train the dogs,” said Mayer.

Mayer says the 16 hours is a national guideline, but they often train even more than that.
