MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — Riding a bike is almost second nature to lots of kids around our state, but some children with disabilities never get to experience the excitement of riding around their neighborhood.

But, the iCan Bike Camp is changing that for many kids in Minot this week.

iCan Bike is a five-day long summer program at the YMCA, which allows children with special needs to be able to ride a bike.

The adaptable bikes provide balance and adjustability, which then helps the kids pedal themselves.

And according to the organization, after the five-day camp is over, 80% of participants learn to ride a conventional two-wheel bike, all by themselves.

Not only does this camp encourage kids to improve their skills, it is a form of exercise and a new way for them to stay active.

“This is an incredible experience for our community and a lot of these riders, I believe the program boasts about an 80% success rate that these kids will be able to ride a two-wheel bicycle. So they are now able to do that for exercise, for leisure, for social activities. They can go out with their friends and their family. It provides an opportunity for exercise and all of the things kids should be doing now they are able to do that,” said Krystal Butgerit, the executive director of Prairie Grit Adaptive Sports.

There are plans in the near future to do an iCan Swim and iCan Dance camp.
