MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — During our North Dakota summers, many locals want to jump into the pool or spend a day out on the river. Swimming is a fun exercise, but it is important to be safe, especially when you are in one of our state’s many lakes or rivers.

The Minot Family YMCA Aquatics Director Jayden Rensch shared some tips for swimming safely, with us. He says although swimming can be exhausting, drinking lots of clean water can help.

One other way to stay safe in the water is to make sure no one is swimming alone. It’s also important to use a pool cover on your pool when no one is using it which helps prevent accidental drowning.

“Super Preventable incidents happen every day,” Rensch states. “Proper swim lesson training and proper adult training is always necessary.”

Rensch also wants to remind everyone that you need to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when swimming in a pool or lake.
