MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — Airlines are canceling and delaying flights due to a global software system shutdown.

Minot International Airport Director Jennifer Eckman says the delay has to do with computer systems they have no control over.

She mentions the Federal Aviation Administration put out a ground stop on a number of airports, so some of the larger airports wouldn’t be affected by too many airplanes on the ground at one time.

Allegiant Airlines took down its website, so the only information you can find is through its Facebook page.

“It has been a very busy day. It is really difficult, especially on a heavy travel day such as a Friday in the summer and lots of passengers are trying to get to start their summer vacations and things like that,” said Eckman.

Eckman says she doesn’t know how long the flights will be delayed as it depends on how long it takes to make the updates with whatever is wrong with the computer programs.

She adds the outage hasn’t impacted the airport directly, they are still open, and all of their equipment is still working.
