MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — You may love playing fetch with your dog at the park, but there’s a group who makes a living doing that with rescue dogs and they’re showing off in Minot this week.

KX News Reporter Corbin Warnock met the group Disc-Connected K9s to find out how they do it.

This group of dogs and handlers made the trip from Jacksonville, Florida. They perform every day at the fair and just like the dogs, the name is special.

These dogs doing the tricks are rescues and the people in charge at Disc-Connected take in dogs that were once abandoned, homeless, or surrendered.

Trainer Jodi Frederick says they primarily train working dogs, including Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, and Jack Russell terriers, smart dogs that have endless energy.

Their goal is to find those dogs new homes and this is Disc-Connected K9’s fourth year at the State Fair.

They travel with about 16 dogs, but Frederick says the big priority is having a vet to make sure the dogs aren’t getting too worn out.

“A dog has to be at least 18 months old before they can do all the high jumps because their growth plates have to harden and they have to be physically sound before you start jumping them. Otherwise, they have the potential of getting hip dysplasia or hurting their backs,” said Frederick.

Frederick and her husband also have a foster care program for dogs, they train them and find homes for them.

On average, they say they find homes for between 30 and 40 dogs a year.

    Disc-Connected performs every day at Stage 3 at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m.
