MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — The Minot Multi-Farm Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in Glenburn is bringing bounties of all different kinds of locally grown and raised food to the people right here in North Dakota.

“Over 15 producers have come together to put a big box together of local foods,” said Desiree Carlson, the founder of Minot Multi-Farm CSA.

Starting on July 31, the CSA is offering food bundles of meat, eggs, vegetables, and other produce for six weeks — all coming from trusted growers all across our state.

Organizers of the co-op say they saw the need in the community and decided to act.

“We did a CSA on our own farm and realized that working on a farm with a bunch farmers was so much easier and really built community and just felt more accomplishing,” said Carlson.

Contributions from Esther’s Acres are one of the many reasons co-ops have helped feed North Dakota and remove food deserts in the Rough Rider State.

After testing the waters in the co-op world, organizers say adjustments had to be made for continued success.

“So we started this program last year as an experimental trial. We wanted to test the waters for the Minot area to see how the community would respond to something like this and we wanted to see what producers would be involved and what they would have. This year, we knew creating something that was a little more structured and a little better planned out would be necessary for it to be successful and I think that is represented of what we have thus far,” said Quinn Renfandt, a food producer.

While the need for these co-ops is strong, the ability to access local foods comes from being a reliable presence in the area.

“If we maintain consistency and have a consistent offering throughout the year it will give producers and customers an opportunity to access local foods,” said Renfandt.

Organizers want to continue to gather and give food bundles out more often and hope to expand on an even larger scale next time around.
