GRANGER — Austin Christner outshot fellow Mishawaka resident Jonah Kumfer by two strokes on their incoming nine holes Sunday at Knollwood Country Club’s East Course and took the midway lead in the 100 th Greater South Bend Men’s Metro Golf Tournament.

The 28-year-old Christner, who led after the first round at Elbel Park Saturday after shooting a two-under 70, shot a three-over 39 on his first nine holes, the East Course’s back nine, allowing the 21-year-old Kumfer, a senior on the Bethel University golf team, to catch him.

But a birdie on the 18 th hole followed by another on the first hole and one more at the seventh allowed Christner, who has finished fifth, fourth and fifth in his last three Men’s Metro tournaments, to regain the lead on his way to a round of two-over 74 and a two-day total of even-par 144. Kumfer, who also birdied Nos. 18 and 1, bogeyed Nos. 3, 4 and 6 on his way to a 74 and a two-day total of 146.

Chris Shaw was alone in fifth place at nine-over 153 after shooting a 79.

The tournament concludes next weekend with rounds Saturday and Sunday at Erskine Park.
