Pit Spitters fall to Rivets in Independence Day Celebration Game
TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City Pit Spitters fell 2-1 to the Rockford Rivets on Tuesday as the Pit Spitters held their Independence Day Celebration Game. The Pit Spitters only managed two hits all night in this one, they’re only run was a home run from Vahn Lackey in the 7th inning, and for Rockford their only runs came on a 2-run home run in the 2nd inning. Logan Pikur pitched seven innings for the Pit Spitters giving up two runs and striking out four. he Pit Spitters will finish the first half with a 17-18 record and will take on Royal Oak in their next game on Wednesday.
Kids and adults have a great time at the NCF Cherry Pie Eating Contest
TRAVERSE CITY - On Monday at the National Cherry Festival the first Children Pie Eating Contest and Adult Pie Eating contests took place. The rules were simple, put your hands behind your back and eat the pie as fast as possible. It was a great event for both adults and children, and the events will continue throughout the week.
Ferris State hockey player Trevor Taulien among prospects invited to Detroit Red Wings Development Camp
BIG RAPIDS - Ferris State University hockey defenseman Trevor Taulien, who completed his freshman season with the Bulldogs this past year, has earned an invitation to the Detroit Red Wings Development Camp. Taulien is a free agent invite for the Red Wings’ 2024 Development Camp, which runs July 1 to July 5 at the BELFOR Training Center inside Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. He’s among 50 camp invitees, including 29 forwards, 14 defensemen and seven goaltenders. The camp will be split into two teams – Team Red and Team White – and will feature daily on-ice instruction and skill development from a team of coaches, led by the Red Wings player development staff. Attendees will also take part in NHL-level off-ice workouts and attend presentations designed to help players transition to professional hockey, while experiencing the state-of-the-art player amenities offered at Little Caesars Arena and receiving feedback from Red Wings coaches and management.
Gaylord’s Aubrey Jones named Gatorade & MaxPreps Player of the Year in the state of Michigan
GAYLORD - Gaylord’s Aubrey Jones was named both the Gatorade Player of the Year and MaxPreps Player of the Year in the state of Michigan in June. Jones was a key part of Gaylord’s state championship run as the Lady Blue Devils went back-to-back as state champions in division two. According to MaxPreps Jones led the nation in home runs with 26 and RBIs with 84. She also went 15-0 pitching this year, striking out 122 batters. Jones sees the awards as recognition for the team rather than herself. “My goal has never really been to get accolades for myself. I always do my best for my team, this year I had a great season, so I’ve gotten more awards that I’m usually used to, but none of that would be possible if I didn’t have the team, I had behind me all year. So, I really think all my awards, are team awards, because I wouldn’t get them without them.” Said Jones. Aubrey Jones will be heading off to Oklahoma State after her senior year, where she hopes that Gaylord can threepeat as State Champions.
Clare’s Bradley White rewrites the school’s record books on his way to Northwood
CLARE - The Clare boys track and field team has had some serious success in recent history, they’ve won the team state championship in division three, seven years in a row. A big portion of the success was due to the senior class and one particular senior, Bradley White has a lot of the records for long distance at the school. He holds the record in the 800 Meters, the 1600 (mile), the 5K, and he was also a member of the 4X400 relay team that holds the school record. White also won the 800 Meter race at the state...

ELK RAPIDS - Broncos tight end and Elk Rapids native Adam Trautman held his first football camp back in his hometown of Elk Rapids on Wednesday. The camp consisted of hundreds of kids from 3rd-8th grade making their way to Elk Rapids for a day of fun with Trautman and Volunteers from Elk Rapids High School. After day 2 of the Michigan PGA Women’s Open Jessica Welch still holds strong lead
THOMPSONVILLE - After day 2 of Michigan PGA Women’s Open Jessica Welch sits -11 with a 6-stroke lead ahead of the rest of the field. She came into day 2 of the tournament at -9 and was able to shoot 2 under on Tuesday. Welch had just one bogey all day and it came on the first hole, after that she only made par or birdie the rest of the way. She said after her round today that she wouldn’t miss the event for anything. “Once I found this event, I will not miss it. I plan it every year if even if it’s not humanly possible. I want to play in this event because the course is beautiful it’s so well run the weather is amazing, so this has become a definite stop for me.” Welch Said. We had a couple local athletes in action Anci Dy a Traverse City Native shot even today, equaling her score from yesterday and putting her tied for 5th on the leaderboard. She has played this event many times in her years of golfing.
Ferris State’s McCoy Biagioli wins Michigan Amateur Championship
HARBOR SPRINGS – McCoy Biagioli of White Lake, a Ferris State University golfer, won the 113th Michigan Amateur Championship on The Heather course at The Highlands at Harbor Springs Friday. Biagioli led or was tied for 16 of the 17 holes of the Championship match between him and Northville native Jimmy Dales. After the match Biagioli talked about his performance. “I kind of struggled all day hitting the ball, but I putted it great. So, I just knew if I could give myself a few chances going into the back nine, it’d help me. So, on that back nine, I think when I got to 11, I made a birdie on 12 I saved par and then 13 and 14 I gave myself two more chances, that really gave me momentum going forward into 15, 16, 17.” Said Biagioli. With the win Biagioli also qualifies for the 2024 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship in Minnesota.
Barry Sanders says he experienced ‘health scare’ related to his heart
DETROIT (AP) — Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders says he “experienced a health scare” involving his heart last weekend. The former Detroit Lions great posted a statement on social media about the incident, saying it “served as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant about our physical well-being.” The Lions issued their own social media post urging Sanders to get well. Sanders, who turns 56 next month, was a six-time All-Pro while starring for the Lions from 1989-98 before his sudden retirement.
Buckley’s Aiden Harrand heads to Wake Forest with ten State Championships to her name
BUCKLEY — Aiden Harrand was born to run. She started from a young age, and her mom was the cross country coach at Buckley. In her four years at Buckley, Harrand was won ten MHSAA state championships. She’s won the mile all four years, 2 titles in the 800, 2 in cross country, 1 in the 3200 and 1 in the 400. Harrand was even running new races her senior year. “I ran the 400, so getting that title, I mean it was my last season, so why not get a new title, I guess,” said Harrand.
Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie, qualifies for first USGA event
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — Charlie Woods earned his way into his first USGA championship on Wednesday when the 15-year-old son of Tiger Woods had the leading score among qualifiers for the U.S. Junior Amateur next month at Oakland Hills. Charlie Woods recovered from a bogey-double bogey start at Eagle Trace Golf Club to finish with a 1-under 71 to be medalist from his qualifier, one of four players to qualify from the site. “I didn’t play great my first two holes, but I played really good for the last 16. I just told myself not to make any more bogeys or doubles and I took advantage of some nice birdie looks when I had them,” Woods said. Tiger Woods was 14 when he qualified for his first U.S. Junior, reaching the semifinals. Woods won his first U.S. Junior Amateur a year later at Bay Hill in 19 holes. Woods is the only player to win the U.S. Junior three straight times.
Evart makes school history claiming first ever state championship
EAST LANSING - The Evart Wildcats claimed the school’s first ever team-sport state championship beating Ottawa Lake Whiteford 1-0. The Wildcats only needed one hit to claim the school’s first ever state title and it came courtesy of Mattisen Tiedt in the bottom of the 6th inning. Tiedt hit a single to right field that brought in Allyson Theunick for the game’s only run. Sophomore Kyrah Gray put on a clinic pitching 7 scoreless innings and striking out 12 batters in the win. Mattisen Tiedt says that as soon as the ball hit the ground, she knew they were destined for the trophy. “I went up there with the mindset that I have to go right field. She’s not going to give me anything down the middle because I’m four hole, so I have to go that right field. So as soon as that pitch came, it looked good. So I stepped right towards it, kept it straight, and I went to right field, as soon as it hit, all I thought in my head was, that’s game. Like as soon as I hit the ground, I was like, we won no doubt about it.” Said Tiedt.
Gaylord wins 2nd straight state championship, beating Vicksburg in extra innings
EAST LANSING - The Gaylord Blue Devils made it back-to-back division 2 state championships as they beat Vicksburg 3-2 in 8 innings. Gaylord got the scoring started in the first inning and then added another run in the 2nd. Vicksburg scored with two outs left in the bottom of the 7th sending the game to extra innings. In the 8th Jayden Jones hit helped score Alexis Shepherd which ended up being the winning run. Aubrey Jones pitched the complete game for Gaylord striking out 5 and only giving up 2 runs in 8 innings. The entire team was very emotional after the game, with many members of the team being seniors, including Jayden Jones. “It’s been a battle, it’s been a grind. We’ve had overcome a lot, a lot of people doubted us, a lot of people didn’t want us to win. And we proved a lot of people wrong.” Said Jones. “I’m just so glad to have had these last ten years with this team, it’s really, really sad, though, that it’s over.”
Beal City wins back-to-back state titles as Cayden Smith makes MHSAA history with perfect game
EAST LANSING - The Beal City Aggies were back in the state title game for the third year in a row on Saturday and they made it back-to-back Division 4 state titles as they beat Norway 10-0 after five innings. The scoring got started in the 1st inning for the Aggies and it didn’t stop until the game ended. Jack Fussman scored the game winning run as Josh Wilson hit a chopper to 2nd base and the throw to the catcher was wide for a Beal City walk off win. Cayden Smith made MHSAA history becoming the first player to pitch a perfect game in a baseball state final, he retired every batter he faced, striking out 8. After the game Smith was quick to give the recognition to his teammates.
Hillman can't get past Holton in State Semifinals
EAST LANSING - The Hillman Tigers fell to the Holton Red Devils 8-0 in the state semifinals on Friday. Hillman had averaged the most runs of any team in MHSAA history coming into today’s matchup, but they couldn’t catch a break against the Red Devils on Friday. Hillman head coach, Jason Weiland knew that it was just a tough day for the team. “I know these girls are very dedicated and they are not going to give up, they’re a wonderful team and to fall short like that they felt like they let their whole community down and I know it because I feel the same way. But they’re a good group of girls you don’t score 561 runs in a season by doing what we just did out here today.” Said Weiland.
Clare falls to Ottawa Lake Whiteford in State Semifinals
EAST LANSING - The Clare Pioneers lost to Ottawa Lake Whiteford 1-0 on Friday in the state semifinals. Whiteford scored one run in the first inning and it ended up being enough to get the win. Clare’s pitcher, Madison Jones gave up just the one run on six hits. Clare head coach, Shane Kelly talked about how proud he was of his team after the game. “I’m Super proud of my girls, they kept fighting, we played defense all year behind an unbelievable pitcher, Madison believes in our defense and our defense believes in our pitcher. It was a great, great season, we came up one game short,” said Kelly. Clare does return a lot of players to next years team.
Beal City looks for back-to-back state titles as they beat Maple Valley in the State Semis
EAST LANSING - The Beal City Aggies are heading back to the state title for the 3rd year in a row after beating Vermontville Maple Valley 5-1 in the state semifinal. The Aggies scored 3 runs in the first inning and got a great outing from Josh Wilson on the mound, he pitched the complete game only giving up 3 hits and one runs. The Aggies will take on Norway in Division 4 state final Saturday at 2:30 as they look to become back-to-back state champs.
Gaylord advances to State Championship, looking to repeat as D2 Champs
EAST LANSING - The Gaylord Blue Devils are heading back to the state title game after beat Milan 9-0 in the state semifinals. The Blue Devils got the scoring started in the first inning and kept adding to it all afternoon. Aubrey Jones had a home run in the 6th inning to seal the deal, her 26th of the year. Jayden Jones pitched a complete game shutout, earning her first win in East Lansing as she was injured last year. Gaylord will play in the state title game on Saturday at 12:30.
