St. Ignace postseason run ends in MHSAA semifinals, Doug Ingalls calls it a career
EAST LANSING - The St. Ignace Saints fell to Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian 60-53 in the state semifinals Thursday night. This one was a close game all the way until they end when Tri-Unity were able to knock down their free throws to secure the win. Jonny Ingalls had a game-high 31 points for the Saints, his father, Doug, has been the head coach at St. Ignace for the past 26 seasons, winning over 350 games. “I’m so grateful to be able to be the coach at one school for 32 years, and to finish it off here,” Ingalls said. “Obviously it’s special with my son, but those first 20 years I don’t coach my kids and it was special then too, so this was awesome, to finish my last game with him and these seniors.” The Saints season ends with a record of 21-7.
McBain’s season comes to an end at the hands of Niles Brandywine
EAST LANSING - The McBain Ramblers 2023-24 season came to an end on Thursday afternoon as the Ramblers lost a heartbreaker 51-48 in overtime. McBain led for most of the game, but Brandywine hit a buzzer beater putback to send the game to Overtime where the Ramblers eventually lost. Head Coach Bruce Koopman was proud of the way that his team was fired up from the opening tip. “They came in here with a little hunger in their stomach so, I, having been down here myself and it’s an awe moment and I thought our kids got off the bus and came ready to play,” Koopman said. “They astounded me by their resiliency because they could’ve just got caught up in the moment and they didn’t, and they took a team that was had been here and been through this and battled right to the end.” Koopman also talked about how much senior center Evan Haverkamp has meant to the program.
Lions give contract extensions to Dan Campbell, Brad Holmes and Chris Spielman
The Detroit Lions announced Thursday that the team has agreed to contract extensions with three staff members. Executive vice president/general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell both agreed to multi-year extensions that keep them on the Lions through the 2027 season. Special assistant to the president/CEO and chairperson Chris Spielman also received a multi-year extension, the club reported. “We are thrilled to have Brad and Dan under contract for the next four seasons,” Detroit Lions principal owner and chair Sheila Hamp said in a press release. “They have been the driving force behind the rebuild of our football team and the success that we have enjoyed. The continuity they provide for our football program will continue to be the key to our future success on the field.”
Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart captures regional title with win over Breckenridge
MT. PLEASANT — After a low-scoring first half, the Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Irish came out of the halftime locker room firing, using a big third quarter to break open their division four regional final on Wednesday night, going on to defeat league rival Breckenridge 40-27. The two teams split their regular season matchups, with the home team each winning by 16 points. The third matchup of the season seemed poised to be tense to the finish, with the Irish leading by two points at the end of the first quarter (9-7), and just three points (17-14) at halftime. Sacred Heart defended the Huskies tightly in the third quarter, limiting them to just three points, as they were able to take a 28-17 lead into the fourth quarter.
Elk Rapids and St. Ignace both take home regional titles
NEWBERRY — In Newberry tonight, two girls regional final games. The first game....the 15-11 West Iron County Wykons battling the 23-2 Elk Rapids Elks in D-3 Region 17 action. This one was a battle back and forth all game with Elk Rapids beating West Iron County 47-43. The Elks will play 24-2 Lake City in Houghton Lake Tuesday in Quarterfinal action. In the second game, the 17-7 St. Ignace Saints face the 21-4 Munising Mustangs in D-4 action. The Saints started off slow and by the end of the first quarter were down 12-5.
Lake City take down Sanford Meridian, capture regional title
SANFORD — A year after losing a heart-breaking regional final to the eventual state champions, the Lake City Trojans finally hoisted a regional trophy on Wednesday night, topping Sanford Meridian 54-41. The Trojans held a slim 13-11 lead after the first eight minutes of play, but they were able to stretch things out by holding the Mustangs to just six points in the second quarter. Lake City led 23-17 at halftime. Mackenzie Bisballe carried the day for the Trojans, scoring 31 points, 18 of them coming in the second half. Halen McLaughlin led Sanford Meridian with 13 points, with teammate Katie Chinavare chipping in with 10 points. With their 24th straight win of the season, Lake City (24-2) earns a matchup with Elk Rapids in a division three quarterfinal at Houghton Lake High School on Tuesday night. Sanford Meridian sees their season come to a close at 23-2 on the season.
Frankfort beat Gaylord St. Mary, win regional championship
KALKASKA - The Frankfort Panthers beat the Gaylord St. Mary Snowbirds 64-37 to claim the regional title. The Panthers trailed 9-0 early but stormed back in the 2nd quarter and led going into halftime, they used a big 2nd half to secure a win and a spot in the state quarterfinals. Frankfort’s Evelyn VanTol had a game high 30 points, while Addison Chownyk added 13, for the Snowbirds, Emery Blust had 16 points. Frankfort will take on Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart in the quarterfinal, while Gaylor St. Mary’s season comes to an end with a 17-9 record.
Negaunee takes regional title with win over Ludington
PETOSKEY— Wednesday night, the Negaunee Miners tipped off against the Ludington Orioles in the Division 2 Regional 9 final. The Miners came out on top 52-35 to continue their near-perfect (25-1) season. They will face Flint Powers Catholic on Tuesday in the state quarterfinal at Gladwin.
BRESLIN BOUND! St. Ignace powers past Crystal Falls Forest Park
GLADSTONE - The St. Ignace Saints boys basketball team made a bit of program history, defeating Crystal Fall Forest Park on Tuesday night 68-51 to advance to their first state semifinal in 41 years. Jonny Ingalls kept his torrid postseason scoring pace going, after notching 77 total points in a pair of regional wins last week, he poured in 41 points tonight to lead the Saints to victory. Ethan McLean chipped in with a trio of clutch three-pointers for the Saints, notching 13 points on the night. The Saints (21-6) will take on Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian in the Division Four State Semifinal at 5:30 p.m. at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

HOUGHTON LAKE - The Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Irish broke the game open with a 12-0 run spanning the end of the first quarter and the first part of the second quarter, as they opened up a lead that they would not relinquish on the way to a 63-51 division four quarterfinal victory over Glen Lake on Tuesday evening. “Unbelievable game,” Irish head coach Justin Sherlock said. “Glen Lake is a really, really good team. They’re well-coached. We knew it was going to be a battle, but our kids all year, they’ve just fought hard every game.” After a Benji Allen layup with about 2:30 left in the first quarter pulled the Lakers within a point, 10-9, the Irish ripped off the next 12 points to build a 22-9 advantage and send the red-clad fans into a frenzy. “I mean that’s one of the best feelings besides winning at the end of the game,” Sacred Heart sophomore Noah Zeien said about the big Irish run in the first half.
BRESLIN BOUND! The McBain Ramblers are rambling to East Lansing
GAYLORD - The McBain Ramblers beat the Menominee Maroons 51-49 in a thrilling state quarterfinal matchup. It was a back-and-forth game, but the Ramblers found themselves trailing at the end of each quarter, but all that matters is the score at the end of the game. McBain got a great game out of freshman Clayton Heuker, with 11 points off the bench. Ben Rodenbaugh had a team high 14 points, he also hit the go-ahead free throw with less than 20 seconds left in the game. Senior Evan Haverkamp had 12 points, and fellow senior Claydon Ingleright had 11 points including a massive three pointer late in the game. McBain head coach Bruce Koopman is just taking it game by game. “You know, we’re just going to look at who we play next, that’s how we’re doing it, if we get to Saturday, that’s just a little more icing on the cake.” said Koopman.
Lions add CB Amik Robertson on a $9.25M, 2-year deal, AP source says
DETROIT — The Detroit Lions and cornerback Amik Robertson agreed to a $9.25 million, two-year deal containing $1.5 million in incentives, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the move can’t become official until the new league year begins Wednesday. Robertson had two interceptions for the second straight season last year for the Las Vegas Raiders, starting 12 games and playing as a backup in five. The Raiders drafted Robertson out of Louisiana Tech in the fourth round in 2020. He started 21 of 52 games over four seasons, making 111 tackles and four interceptions. Detroit bolstered its secondary, a weakness of last season’s breakout team, for the second straight day.
Central Michigan draft eligible prospects shine during Pro Day
MOUNT PLEASANT— Six Central Michigan Chippewas participated in their annual NFL Pro Day on Tuesday morning. Among the bunch were wide receiver Kenny Brewer III, defensive lineman Jacques Bristol, offensive lineman Deiyantei Powell-Woods, defensive lineman Robi Stuart, punter Jake Walrath, and defensive lineman Maurice White. The prospects families and friends were in attendance, including some old teammates- who now find themselves in the NFL. “Thomas Incoom, with the Denver Broncos, I feel like he molded me to be where I’m at today and actually take it seriously,” Bristol said.
Laker and Bulldog hockey standouts recognized in CCHA postseason awards
With four teams still alive to claim the CCHA Tournament Championship, and an automatic berth to the NCAA Hockey Tournament, the league has released their all-conference and all-rookie teams, as well as naming the finalists for their individual end of season awards. Three members of the Lake Superior State Lakers and one Ferris State Bulldog earned recognition. Elk Rapids rolls past Roscommon to the regional final
MANCELONA - The Elk Rapids Elks jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a comfortable 57-19 regional semifinal win over Roscommon on Monday night. The Elks led by 10 points at the end of the first quarter, and 16 points at halftime in rolling to their 11th straight victory. Kendall Standfest led Elk Rapids on the night with a 21-point effort. Teammate Morgan Bergquist chipped in with 17 points, and Brooke Fluty added 10. The Elks (23-2) will take on West Iron County on Wednesday night at St. Ignace High School for the regional title. Roscommon ends their season with a 17-8 overall record.
Gaylord St. Mary shoots past Mio in regional semifinal
KALKASKA - In a battle of teams comfortable with shooting from beyond the arc, the Gaylord St. Mary Snowbirds pulled away for a 61-54 regional semifinal victory over Mio on Monday night. The Snowbirds made nine three-pointers on the night, led by Kaylee Jeffers, who made four threes alone in the first quarter to help stake St. Mary to an early lead. The Thunderbolts came back in the second quarter, led by star fresman Mia McGregor, to take a 23-22 lead at halftime. McGregor made seven threes on the game in scoring a game-high 46 points. Gaylord St. Mary flipped the script in the third, taking a 39-36 lead into the final frame.
Frankfort comes from behind to stun Glen Lake in regional semifinal
KALKASKA - The Frankfort Panthers exacted sweet revenge over league rival Glen Lake in a division four regional final on Monday night, eliminating the Lakers in dramatic fashion, 45-42. The Lakers had defeated the Panthers in both regular season meeting between the two teams, and they appeared poised for a third straight win early on, as they used an early 12-0 run in the first quarter to take a 10-point lead after the first eight minutes of play. Frankfort would battle back in the second quarter, closing the gap to just two points at the halftime break. It would remain a two-point Lakers lead heading into the fourth quarter, where the Panthers would outscore Glen Lake 19-14 to earn the win. Evelyn VanTol led the Panthers to victory, scoring a team-high 19 points. Glen Lake’s Eleanor Valkner matched her with 19 points of her own. The Lakers’ Lydia Fosmore added 15 points.
Midland Dow ends Traverse City Central season with second half comeback
CADILLAC— Traverse City Central tipped off against Midland Dow on Monday night in a division one region 1 semifinal. The Chargers came out on top on the night 60-42, despite trailing the entirety of the first half. Dow will go on to play Rockford in Wednesday’s Regional final.
Brimley girls basketball season ends in regional semi to Munising
BRIMLEY— In Brimley Monday night, the Bays hosted the Mustangs from Munising. In the regular season, the Mustangs won both games by double digits. After the first quarter, the Mustangs were up 7-6 and at halftime, they were up 20-17. Munising gradually added to the lead and after three, 30-23. The Bays never could get on track in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs pulled away with the 47-30 victory.
