CMU coaching legend Tom Borrelli announces retirement after winning 30th MAC title
MOUNT PLEASANT— One of wrestling’s winningest coaches is stepping down following the 2023-24 season. Tom Borrelli led the Central Michigan wrestling team to a first-place finish over the weekend in the Mid-American Conference Championships, the team’s 15th under Borrelli. Saturday he also became a 15-time MAC Coach of the Year. The Chippewas went 8-8 on the season and 6-1 in the MAC this season. They will hit the mats again on March 21 for the NCAA Tournament.
Central Michigan falls to Akron on senior day
MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan Chippewas women’s basketball team fell to the Akron Zips 65-57 on senior day at McGuirk Arena. The Chippewas fell behind early and just weren’t able to claw themselves back in front of Akron. Rochelle Norris led the Chippewas with 18 points, Tamara Ortiz chipped in with 12 points. The Chippewas end the season with a 6-22 record.

After 50 years, Beaverton coach Roy Johnston hangs up the red blazer with record wins
BEAVERTON — For the past 50 years, 11 presidents, over 400 players, 3 generations and 2 different gyms, Roy Johnston has been Beaverton’s boys’ basketball coach. He holds the record for the most wins in MHSAA history with 888. In those years as the head coach of the beavers’ boys’ squad, he won 21 Jack Pine Conference Championships, 17 District Titles, 6 Regional crowns, and made a semifinal appearance. When asked about what he wanted people to remember him by Roy said. “I want people to think that I love this town, I love this school, and I love what I did. How many people can say that they’ve been lucky enough to do that for 50 years. I’ve just been blessed. I’ve been blessed with good health, and so I had a chance to accomplish it, and I did.” Said Johnston. Roy has achieved some incredible things over the years but when coaching for 50 years you can accomplish some one-of-a-kind things.
Glen Lake defeats Bellaire to claim regional crown
BELLAIRE - The Glen Lake Lakers established an early lead, and they were able to hold off a second-half Bellaire rally to win a division four regional championship 65-49 on Thursday evening. Glen Lake jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first quarter and extended that lead to 30-13 at the half. The Lakers would lead by as much as 21 points in the third quarter before the Eagles mounted an attempted comeback, pulling within 13 at the end of the third quarter, and within 11 at a couple different points early in the fourth, but that was as close as they were able to get, as the pair of Benji Allen and Jacob Plamondon helped propel the Lakers to the victory. Plamondon led Glen Lake with a 23-point effort. Allen chipped in with 14 points. Bellaire’ Drake Koepke scored a team-high 16 points, with Jayden Hanson adding 14.
Ludington suffers tough loss in regional final
GAYLORD - The Ludington Orioles jumped out to a quick first quarter lead in their division two regional final on Thursday night, but they could not hold on, as they fell to Kingsford 37-34. The Orioles started the game with a 7-0 run, but the Flivvers were able to come back and take a 1-point lead at the end of the first quarter (11-10). The teams would swap the lead back and forth in the second quarter, before a late Oriole run would take them into the half with a 22-19 advantage. The Flivvers would limit the Orioles to just 12 second-half points, including blocking a last-second shot by the Orioles to preserve the victory. Ludington sees their season end with a 19-7 overall record. Kingsford advances to face Flint Powers Catholic in the state quarterfinal on Tuesday night in Big Rapids.
The Ferris State Bulldogs are looking for an upset in the opening round of the CCHA Playoffs
BIG RAPIDS - The Ferris State Bulldogs hockey team is heading into the CCHA tournament as the 8th seed, going up against the number one seeded Bemidji State Beavers. The best of three series will begin on Friday with puck drop slated for 8:07 Eastern time, the Bulldogs have had some success against the Beavers this season, beating them at home in Big Rapids and taking a game to overtime on the road. St. Ignace is heading to the state quarterfinal, beating Munising
SAULT STE. MARIE - The Region 18 Division 4 Regional Final was held in Sault Ste. Marie Thursday evening as the 19-6 St. Ignace Saints battle the 20-4, and defending state champions, Munising Mustangs. After the first quarter, Saints were up 9-4 and at half 23-17. At the end of the third, Saints increased the lead to 13 leading 40-27. The Saints win the regional title 58-42 and now play Crystal Falls Forest Park Tuesday at 7p.m. in Gladstone in quarterfinal action.
McBain is rambling on, beating Sanford Meridian in the regional final
HOUGHTON LAKE - The McBain Ramblers beat the Sanford Meridian Mustangs 62-51 in the regional final to advance to the state quarterfinals. The game was tightly contested from the opening tip, but the ramblers were able to pull away late in the 4th quarter to secure the win. McBain will play Menominee on Tuesday at Lake City, while Sanford Meridian’s season comes to an end with a 21-5 record.
Ferris State men and women advance to GLIAC Tourney semifinals
BIG RAPIDS - The Ferris State men’s and women’s basketball teams won games on their home court in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournaments on Wednesday. In the first game of the night, the Bulldog women shook off a slow start, falling behind 7th-seed Saginaw Valley State by nine points in the first quarter. They used a 19-6 performance in the second quarter to take a lead into the halftime locker room and control of the game. The 2nd-seed Bulldogs went on to win the contest 54-47. DeShonna Day and Kadyn Blanchard led Ferris State with 11 points apiece....
Ludington hangs on for emotional win over Hart
BIG RAPIDS - In a physical battle of teams with lofty postseason aspirations, the Ludington Orioles held off a late rally to eliminate the Hart Pirates in a division two district semifinal on Wednesday night 42-37. The teams swapped the lead late in the third quarter, with the Pirates briefly moving in front 26-25, only to see a late basket from Emma Jane McKinley give the Orioles the lead back heading into the final quarter of play. Ludington built a couple of five-point leads in the fourth, but the Pirates kept battling back, pulling within a point with just over two minutes to play at 37-36. From there, the Orioles were able to get a couple of clutch baskets and a free throw to salt away the victory.
Reed City knocks off Big Rapids in district semifinal
BIG RAPIDS - In a defensive battle of long-time rivals, the Reed City Coyotes scored a 39-29 division two district semifinal win over Big Rapids on Wednesday evening. The Coyotes scored the first eight points of the game, and nearly held the Cardinals off the scoreboard in the first quarter of play. Reed City (13-10) beat their rivals for the second time this season, and the first time since meeting back in early December. Big Rapids sees their season come to a conclusion with a 13-9 overall record. Reed City advances to meet Ludington in the division two district championship game at Big Rapids High School on Friday night.
Traverse City Central punches district title ticket with win over West
TRAVERSE CITY— Traverse City West hosted Traverse City Central on Wednesday night in a district semifinal. The visiting Trojans topped the Titans 58-34. With the win, the Trojans remain undefeated against Big North Conference teams on the season, and become host to BNC foe- the Alpena Wildcats- for Friday’s district final. The last time the two programs met, the Trojans topped the Wildcats 53-38. Tipoff for Friday night’s game is set for 6pm.
Manton beats Manistee to advance to district title game
MANTON - The Manton Rangers topped the Manistee Mariners 60-51 in district semifinal action Wednesday night. The Rangers were led by Lauren Wilder with 33 points and Aubrey Hiller had 17, for Manistee Jayna Edmondson had 24 points. Manton advances to the district final against Mason County Central, while Manistee’s season comes to an end with a 11-13 record.
Mason County Central gets big win over Benzie Central in district semifinal
MANTON - The Mason County Central Spartans beat the Benzie Central Huskies 50-30 in the district semifinal. Mason County Central were led by with Riley Mast with 14 points and Wren Nelson had 13 points. The Spartans advance to the district title game against Manton, while Benzie’s season comes to an end with an 11-11 record.
Lake Superior State’s men’s basketball season comes to an end at the hands of Wayne State
SAULT STE. MARIE - The #2 seed Lake Superior State University Lakers men’s basketball team hosted the #7 seed Wayne State University Warriors Wednesday night in GLIAC tournament action. The Lakers were down by four at halftime, 35-31. They made a run late in the game but lost 87-78. Devin Womack led the Lakers in scoring with 17 points.
Bellaire blitzes Hillman in regional semifinal
BELLAIRE — The Bellaire Eagles could not have asked for a better start to their division four regional semifinal on their home floor on Tuesday night, racing out of the gates with a 23-2 run on the way to a 76-60 victory over Hillman. The win snapped the Tigers’ 17-game winning streak and brought an end to the prolific career of Hillman senior Trenton Taratuta, who scored 40 points in his final high school contest. The Eagles made six first half three-pointers, with Drake Koepke scoring 19 of his 22 points before halftime. Jayden Hanson led all Eagle scorers with a 30-point night. Dawson Derrer added 10 points for Bellaire, as the Eagles were able to establish a strong inside game against the Hillman front line. Bellaire (21-4) earns a regional final matchup at home against Glen Lake on Thursday, after the Lakers defeated Buckley in the regional semifinal earlier in the evening.
Glen Lake eliminates league rival Buckley in regional semifinal
BELLAIRE — The Glen Lake Lakers topped Northwest Conference rival Buckley for the third time this season, defeating the Bears in a division four regional semifinal 76-53 on Tuesday night. The Lakers used some hot outside shooting to build a 38-25 halftime lead that they would not relinquish in the second half. Jacob Plamondon led the Lakers’ offensive attack, scoring 20 of his team-high 28 points in the second half. Benji Allen netted ten of his 15 points in the first half, including a breakaway dunk. Michael Houtteman added 12 points for Glen Lake, and Cooper Bufalini chipped in with 10. Landon Kulawiak led Buckley offensively with a 20-point effort. Teammate Carter Williams chipped in with 13 for the Bears.
Cadillac holds off Traverse City West in regional semifinal win
GAYLORD— The Cadillac Vikings tipped off against the Traverse City West Titans in Gaylord on Tuesday night in a regional 1 semifinal matchup. The Vikings topped the Titans 59-52. The Titans finish their season with a 19-6 overall record. Cadillac (23-2) will move on to the Regional 1 final on Thursday against (22-2) Muskegon.
